Booster
Best thing that Apple ever invented: Find my iphone. The days of wondering how long have I got before the mrs gets home to crank one off are long gone! All one needs to do is login, find out where she is, decide if one has time to peruse Xvideos (or whatever channel takes your fancy) for suitable material and off you go. If she is in Waitrose I know I have a good hour. W8nk windows are now a far more relaxed affair. Thank you Apple. cruiser647
Best thing that Apple ever invented: Find my iphone. This and locking itunes accounts to a phone is a right PITA. When people leave us, we wipe the phone only to find they have Find my iphone and itunes logged in. Makes the phone pretty useless to us - especially if they leave in a huff or get their admin to drop the stuff into us. Fecking iphones/ipads! I am not impressed so far. Not a big Android fan neither Windows phones for me!
Andrew
Apple have "got" me. I resisted for years but I love the whole synching across devices and other nice touches. I'm sure it is commonplace now but Apple got there first so I'm in. I even prefer OS to Windows. Numbers doesn't trump Excel though!
Rachel
Funny, what's happened to the amazement and wonder that took the world by storm when SJ unveiled the original iPhone? Hardware wise, the higher end manufacturers now all produce amazing hardware and the one thing 'droid devices have that iPhones/iPads don't is NFC. Though the rumour is that in addition to a bigger screen, the new iPhone will now have NFC. As for the ecosystem integration, Google and Apple now offer similar capabilities, and it is up to you whether you use Apple's iCloud integration and hand-off technologies, or the G-cloud equivalents (or mix it up like I do with my iToys all integrated into Google). If this was an Aussie car fanatic discussion - you're either a Holden man or a Ford man... Oh and a take on a NFC equipped iPhone replacing your credit cards: http://www.wired.com/2014/09/iphone-credit-card/ Edited September 6, 2014 by Rachel
NewNiceMrMe
The home automation slant on this discussion interests me. I might be perceived as someone who, because of my general tech interest and Apple-infested home, would be all over this automated lark. Yet I'm not. Not in the slightest. I just can't quite grasp it. I have a single use for automation via my Apple products but even then it doesn't need to be restricted to them. It is that our home CCTV is powered by Y-Cam and their 1080p HD cameras now, and I use their software and Apps, in conjunction with my iMac, iPhone and iPad. Basically, the cameras upload live content into the Cloud. There is no local data. They use a very clever 'area' mapping (per camera) to send 'alerts' to me. This means that if movement is detected on a camera I'm told about it wherever I am in the world. There are others that do this, of course. However, the App is so damned good on iOS that I can immediately view it on any of my Apple devices and I can make any adjustments I want to the home security system (i.e. the cameras individually, as a group or general settings) from anywhere in the world. That is automation I like. It is automated on timings for various sensitivities (i.e. large movement, slight movement, which areas etc), and has a genuine practical use. p.s. The Y-Cam Home Monitor HD products are something I'd recommend to anyone now. I've ran them for about 6 months and the HD quality, the after support and the range of applications and flexibility of the system is absolutely superb. However, heating.....I have a timer that can be scheduled for days etc. If I get home and it is 1 degree colder than I'd have liked it to be, hmmm, it's not going to kill us. Lights, I'll admit I'm inclined to agree with Tipex. Why do I need an app to switch my lights on at home if I'm on the way home? I have a very simple and neat little plug-in digital timer system for 4 lights downstairs that automates them if we're out or away (not that it ever gets used because our eldest never goes with us anywhere now!). We have adopted one home automation tool with gusto. But again, it isn't reliant on an iPhone or an App. That's the iRobot hoover that has been coming out at 11am every day for 3 years and cleaning our landing and upstairs bedrooms flawlessly. Harry, we call it. He's amazing and he doesn't need an app. He just needs emptying (shame they can't automate that!) once every few days and his brushes and stuff cleaning once every few weeks. Best 'home' product we've ever bought. I can't remember the last time I saw him doing his work, but he does it every single day and I don't need an App to control him. He's learned the house over the years and off he trundles (we only use him upstairs to be fair) and then he runs back to his docking station once he's done. So the point is, I do see value in automation, but I just can't quite see it having that many real benefits on iPhone/iPad devices yet. The lights/heating thing in particular is something that has always baffled me. Tipex made me laugh when he said he presses the switch by the door. I agree entirely. If you wanted to do much more with lights then spend £6 on a plug timer thingy or £25 on the digital ones where they can be controlled in a group. I was reading about how much energy these Nest-whatever heating thingies save. No they don't. Don't install one. Let the house get cold. You won't die. Then when you get in, switch the heating on. Bingo. You'll use a lot less energy than having some namby-pamby 'keep the house at 30 degrees or everyone will die from hypothermia' gadgets. bells0
What about the iwatch that's going to be announced at the same time?? Doesn't interest me as i love my mechanical timepieces and treat them as jewellery - a lump of plasticy looking glass is not the look i want. Nor is something monitoring how many steps i've taken in a day!! [bet i still get one next year when they are available to buy.....................] Edited September 6, 2014 by bells0
Tipex
I can't see the point of the watches? As above, I've got a much nicer watch anyway, and i'm not going to make myself look like a tw*t by wearing two, even if one of them does connect to my phone. I don't see how looking at a watch, and only having one hand free to use it, is better than holding the phone and having both hands (well, thumbs) free to use it? Also, i'd have to look like a tw*t with an ear piece in all the time for when someone calls. As for NFC, again, i'm sure it's different in other countries, and perhaps even London, but it has no use whatsoever here, nowhere accepts NFC card payments, let alone via your phone, so I don't think it's something Apple devices 'lack' I just think Apple are realistic in that it's largely of no use yet, so why fit it? I think the only place capable of even tagging your card is McDonalds, and that doesn't work 99% of the time. I thought I saw someone using their phone to NFC tag through the barrier on the London underground once, turned out he just had his Oyster card inside his phone case! So where could I actually use an NFC equipped phone?
bells0
Don't really get the NFC thing either.
Scotty
Had NFC on the crapberry and never used it. However I guess it's a chicken & egg situation. Would adding NFC support to iphones add enough handsets on to the market to make advertisers, stores etc adopt the technology?

CarMad
So a quick guess on whats coming up iPhone and iPad. Two iPhone models to be released 4.7" and 5.5" Display to be 3x the original not the 2x as the current 'Retina' iPhones Processor bump again as ever and even more efficient Battery life to stay static of slightly improve a lot of components have take a big jump in lowering wattage used NFC to be implemented in a secure wallet on the chip - For those that think its pointless, wait and see how quickly this is a game changer Much talk about Sapphire Glass but I think its going to be an upgraded Gorilla Glass so tougher than we have now Barometer is included that might help with weather, internal directions all sorts apparently Upgraded touch ID Camera might be faster focusing or Image stabilising or both, but talk this might be limited to the 5.5" model Phone is going to have curved edges again and thinner than the 5's and the edge of the screen with have a curve on it as well at the very sides iPads to have multi tasking / split screen so you can watch TV and surf at the same time - 13inch iPad out next year iPad is getting even thinner I could go on but they are a starter for 10. garcon magnifique
Interesting point on what Mac said earlier. Unified Comms is clearly the way forward for office communication, but my current client can't be the only organisation slowly realising that if they rush down the bells and whistles unified path without really thinking about it they end up introducing single points of failure to the services they need first when things get brown and sticky. Then they're designing it wrong. Most well setup UC systems can take an awful lot of attrition until core services such as telephony are affected. billy2shots
9th, i.e. Tuesday! The launch is Tuesday but they will not be released then. Estimates anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks after launch. So a quick guess on whats coming up iPhone and iPad. Two iPhone models to be released 4.7" and 5.5" Much talk about Sapphire Glass but I think its going to be an upgraded Gorilla Glass so tougher than we use to. Seems like there is a few issues with the 5.5" so that may be delayed. I was under the impression that Sapphire Glass was binned due to costs and increasing thickness of the screen. If Sapphire Glass IS too expensive then I doubt they will 'upgrade'.

Indeedy, we run a highly resilient solution active active across two DCs for the primary country. Its some of the things that feed off it might be a little less resilient if anything, it does get very very expensive very quickly when its done properly though. As for Sapphire, it seems that it is the brittle nature of it more than anything that got it removed not the cost as they have invested a future in a new plant to make it at very high volume. I think that will all be for the iWatch though.
