CarMad
Yikes, wasn't sure what you meant but just saw the news. After the others had dumped them EE moving on was the last straw I guess. Good for me though as my DixonsCarphone shares are likely to take a jump on Monday with any luck, but not good for the staff running Phones4u. Booster
Gone into administration. Networks have dumped them as they are fed up paying fees to third party resellers. It could be that Carphone Warehouse / Dixons share price increases due to their increased market share or the market might see them as vulnerable as the providers could do the same to them. It does baffle me how they all have such a large High Street presence and survive.
billy2shots
Why the hell are they phoning me up at 7pm last night to try and get me to do a deal.
patently
I raced with one of the Phones4U founders in my Academy year, before he went on to race something more expensive faster than Caterhams. The news prompted me to go and look up what he & his brother sold the firm for... Feck me. I need some smelling salts. I mean, we could all see that he was loaded, but... Talk about good timing! billy2shots
I wonder what people in this situation think. Are they upset that the company they started has gone boom or are they laughing all the way to the bank. If I sold my (family) company having started it 14 years ago I think I would be a little sad if it failed. Although £1.47 billion would soon dry my tears. CarMad
I think there is more to this than meets the eye. Apparently EE sat down to negotiate a new deal earlier in the year but they didn't agree terms and P4U never even returned to the table if the papers are to be believed. CarphoneWarehouse have already got new deals in the wake of O2 and Voda leaving P4U so they seem like the only player on the high street that can offer all networks and also seem to have the most reach in stores terms in and out of town locations and are also adding them into their PCWorld / Currys stores after they merged with Dixons. If the Internet of things really does take off they will be in a very good position.

patently
OK, an update on EE further to my previous comments. If you recall, I bought an iPad-only SIM that had no monthly fee, just a per-MB charge for data usage. The charge could be paid via a direct debit, which they never set up despite me asking them to several times, or by logging in to their website using a username & password that they never sent to me, or by calling a specific number from the handset in question (difficult with an iPad...) or by calling a general customer services line that was never answered. Surprisingly, the account fell behind with payment. I would try to contact them from time to time to offer them money but rarely received a response. In the end, the only way that I found to pay their bills was to get in touch via Twitter and persuade them to call me at a time that was convenient... to them. The last straw was a letter in March which threatened all sorts because I had ignored their previous letters asking for payment. That was, I hardly need say, the first letter I had received from them. So I wrote back with a letter setting out my experience of being an EE customer, enclosing a cheque and the SIM card. End of. Until yesterday. Yesterday, I received a letter (from Orange...) stating that my service will be disconnected unless I pay the outstanding £21.48. If I am disconnected, I will still have to pay for the monthly plan until the end of the contract, apparently. That would be the non-existent monthly charge for the non-existent contract that I terminated back in March. Right. OK. I shall be printing this out to prepare myself in case I need to call them:

CarMad
They are all as bad as each other. My wife moved from Orange to EE, the same company right. ERM no. It took two trips into two shops to move her existing Orange contract over to EE as at first she didn't appear to have a contract because it had finished and erm sorry we can't do anything. So eventually we found someone who knew what they were doing. She had to terminate her existing Orange contract and then create herself as a completely new customer with EE, their systems simply couldn't migrate her or upgrade her. So the obvious happened the old contract wasn't terminated correctly and then she had two bills to pay, she then had to call several times to then explain what had happened and cancel the old contract which wasn't a contract. etc. etc. etc. Its been pain free since then and the service has been good for her so it was worth it in the end. But it would have been easier to join another company than it was to try and stay with them as EE, appalling for a company that should have customer service as its main objectives in life. garcon magnifique
We seem to have reached a position where our economy is entirely service industry based and yet we don't have a single company capable of actually delivering a service. CarMad
So Vodafone is better, well maybe not. Myself and a colleague both ordered new iPhone 6s at the weekend via the corporate deal (they have to call us so its a waiting game), great we thought. So I asked him if he had his text and e-mail confirmations, no was his answer not yet. But they never came. So he called to find out what had gone on, apparently his order was cancelled no idea why, no explanation. So he then has to wait for the call from the corporate guys again and get to the back of the queue, he wasn't best please to say the least. CarMad
We seem to have reached a position where our economy is entirely service industry based and yet we don't have a single company capable of actually delivering a service. For the larger companies that is often the case but not always. I put a colleague onto a bed place that is fairly local to us Garcon called John Ryan. They claim to make the equivalent bed to the likes of Vi-Spring for far less, so she called and spoke to them and the service and advice she got was excellent. They sent her a personal link to pay for her option. Then got a call back to confirm payment and also to explain they will arrange for the bed to be delivered on the day she moves into her new rented accommodation. She couldn't have been happier with the service and fingers crossed the bed will live up to its expectations.
garcon magnifique
There are lots of good examples of local businesses who absolutely rely on offering good service to survive. That's why I'll use them whenever I can. As a nation we get what we deserve. We want what we shouldn't be able to afford for less than it should cost and then complain when companies cut jobs and reduce service levels to deliver it.
CarMad
Booo hiss Just got my sorry you aren't to get your new phone Mr CarMad e-mail from Vodafone. Seems that I'm not the only one. Vodafone seem to be in a mess, it seems some people who pre-ordered first thing on Friday aren't getting their phone but people who ordered the same model after then are, its random or so it seems. I've had three colleagues at work who have had to re-call Voda to get their order in and one called today and theirs is apparently coming tomorrow. Go figure, fingers crossed mine is with me next week would be nice to have it before I go away.
Tipex
Anyone upgraded to OS8 yet? Just finished installing it, and aside from a couple of new icons I can't see a lot of difference on a 4S, but I dare say there is much new to learn. Not actually ordered my 6 yet, will probably wait a couple of weeks now I think, let the rush die down, it's only a phone, I'm not bothered about having it asap. CarMad
My beef is more the fact that I'm now paying more for nothing as I don't have the phone or currently any view whatsoever as to when it might arrive. Not getting it on release day is one thing but then the systems or tracking or anything don't say when it might be which isn't the best way to manage a customers expectations to say the least. Scotty
I put IOS8 on my 4s. The down side is now its 30-50% slower launching apps. It lost the pics associated against my contacts and since they were on my work account theyve also gone out of Outlook etc too now. I've had a few display issues such as icons being blank and the top information line keeps disappearing. I like some of the new features (mainly that notifications can now be used to respond etc). Notifications on certain email responses is also good. I'm hoping IOS8.1 will address some of the speed issues as they did for 4 users when IOS7.1 came out
Tipex
Can't say i've noticed any speed issues on my 4s, as for keyboards, it looks exactly the same to me except for the predictions bar above it? I understand you can load different keyboards now though? As for Swype, I've used it on an Android device before, and I genuinely couldn't see any benefit whatsoever, in fact, I found it much less accurate and way slower. billy2shots
Well I've just had a pleasant surprise. iPhone 6 arrived by UK Mail courier, 5 minutes ago! I got a txt saying 23rd September. There really seems no logic in the ordering process as to who gets their phones when. Still happy though as it's a week earlier than expected. I can now take it to France on my holiday. I can have a good fiddle on the ferry for a few hours. Can also play with my phone
