Waylander
Vital accompaniment to MBP purchase or put £249 to use elsewhere?
Andy_Bangle
Are you still buying it in the states? if you're buying the UK John Lewis gives a 3 year warranty or the Apple NHS Employee programme gives a sort of discount on accessories.. Although the cheapest place I've seen to buy AC is B&H where it's only $250. I ordered the 2.8GHz 15" MBP yesterday
Rachel
As I use mine heavily for work, Apple Care is always part of my new purchases. The 3 years for laptops paid for itself on my 17" MBP more than once. Three issues with a machine means a new machine with Apple Care. Pity I only had two issues with the 17" (& in both cases it was done and returned in about 20 hours). Haven't needed to claim(yet) for other machines, but given the cost of repairs or replacement (esp. here in Oz with our Apple tax) it is a sound investment. Tax deductible too. Waylander
Yes buying from the USA if I do from the Refurb store so I think they give a 12 month warranty as a routine and AppleCare will be $349 Andy is that $250 for 15" MBP with Retina? On Apple itself $249 for 13" MBPs Edited November 26, 2014 by Waylander
Mac
I don't keep mine long enough for it to be important.
Andy_Bangle
Andy is that $250 for 15" MBP with Retina? Yep, MD012LL/A, there's a big margin on AC stuff. B&H or Amazon

Andy_Bangle
Most things are cheaper in the states, just remember you can bring in goods worth up to £390 without having to pay tax and/or duty
Waylander
Indeed thanks. Okay so periperals I have: Apple Care, Parallels....probably PSE 11 as well (didn't get round to buying it yet for daughter's new camera!)
Andy_Bangle
If you're planning on buying Parallels then checkout their BF deal: http://www.parallels.com/mac-bundle-deal/ ... and Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac. drpellypo
I've never bothered with apple care. I never saw the point unless you are a high user. If you are, it makes sense, but the MBP I bought in 2009 is still going strong. likewise with all the other Mac stuff. I refresh phones every year, iPads every 4, but everything else I just keep and have had no problems whatsoever. However admittedly I'm not using them for business/high use.
Waylander
Just a heads-up. Amazon.com are doing Parallels 10 for $62 (vs the $80 bundle direct) Also Amazon UK are doing PSE for £42 today
Mac
AppleCare is just insurance really - I don't bother buying insurance for stuff I can afford to replace/deal with myself. Ultimately you're better off that way.
Rachel
Antivirus? But but but....Macs don't get viruses.... Forget Sophos, go get ClamXAV - 'tis free and as good as anything else... More importantly it is held in higher regard (as in they'll let you in) by corporate gateways and VPNs than many of the paid for versions.
Waylander
Just an update which might help someone...someday...perhaps. Brought the machine over, rang AppleCare yesterday and having the ownership transfered was a breeze (after the 72mins on hold!!) BUT they then couldn't apply the AppleCare online as the address is UK and the extended warranty was bought from the USA so I had to ring again today and was met with: don't worry at all it is no big deal we just have to enter it manually for you - which was duly done within a couple mins and certificate emailed to me. I will install the US-bought license of Parallels soon too and then once satisfied there is no issue with that (I don't see why there would be) will stick the extra copy of AppleCare for MBP 15" and Parallels 10 I have in the For Sale section

Funnily enough after it was set up he ran through the 3 exclusions and I did have a little chuckle at "water damage" and said "I know about that one..." Yup, I've wrecked two now. Well, so they claim. I definitely wrecked the first one. That was subjected to Amazonian rainforest levels of water in the incident. That was a complete write-off. A very expensive error. The second one was contentious. They reckon it was water damaged, I said not. However, £785 later....they'd won.
