Apple Watch launch

The Watch has arrived and I have had a few days using it. :)

First impressions are good, it has replaced my trusty Seiko Kinetic which is both bigger and heavier than my Watch 38mm.

I feel the Watch is a nice add-on to the iPhone as you don't have to take your phone out all the time for quick notification views or short replies to messages etc.

I am getting acceptable battery life and the power reserve mode is vital feature, it would be pretty useless if the Watch completely died.

Looking at the overall package I would say that the Watch needs more useful applications to push its usefulness to warrant the initial price tag, in short terms I could live with paying £300-400 for the Apple Watch but nothing more, they all share the same internals and I don't think the extra cost vs build material is worth it.

Its a first generation product and at this moment in time it feels it, hopefully app developers will change this.

I got one yesterday.

What a wonderfully subtle and clever little device.  It is already doing the single thing I knew it would for me - save me time on picking my bloody phone up constantly.

I waited to see if there were any initial issues and also because I wanted to see what Watch OS 2.0 would bring - and more importantly to see if I should wait for Gen II of the Watch, but I succumbed eventually.

From those I know on Facebook, some of whom are on here, if anything there seems to be more use of the Watch by those that bought them than was initially expected.  Many saying how they've found themselves becoming increasingly fond of the device when it wasn't necessarily something they craved for to begin with.

It is still early days for me but, as someone who as always used Siri a lot, I shall probably take to it easier than most and am finding it as inituitive and easy to use as the rest of the Apple stable of products.

The Gadget Show (yes that highly respected impartial show) did a feature on the Apple Watch last week.

They were asking owners how they got on and if they found them useful.

The result was a resounding 'not useful at all' and 'needs much improvement' but 'still a nice gadget' although most said they wouldn't purchase again.

Make of that what you will, I suspect not much given it's The Gadget Show.

Not having to pick up your phone (unless you actually want to respond in any meaningful way) must save you, ooh, milliseconds every day! ;)

Unsurprising. Difficult to justify more then two per person.

Maybe Apple should target the octopus market?

Ok smart arse, they wouldn't have purchased originally if they knew what they know now.

As I said above though, it was The Gadget Show, who's reviews are utter crap, so the whole post was meant to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Most of their reviews are worthless, when they reject something because it doesn't look 'cool' before actually testing if it's any good, something like a portable speaker for example, it might have the best sound quality but they reject it before they even test the sound quality because of how it looks.

The watch is definitely a cool device but I stand my previous comments, just got for the standard sport as functionality is the same across all the models.

I too tend to take the phone out of my pocket less.

Some will see it as pointless, others will love it.... petty much the same as most Apple branded products..... not cheap.

How else can Apple improve it? :)

Calculator?

It does seem an oversight but there are masses of free calculator apps to choose from as I discovered yesterday.

Of the things Riz mentioned, it goes to show how different people have different things they might want - because my list would be nothing like his:

- Better battery life - I have been very impressed with the battery as it is and never ended the day with less than 30% remaining.

- iSight Camera for photos and FaceTime - I can't see the point.  I will take the iPhone out of my pocket if I want to take photographs.  BUT, I can see it being added for FaceTime

- Temp monitor - why?  If anything, that should be on an iPhone with an app that reads from it, surely?

- Earphone out - why?  The iPhone is going to be in a pocket so surely you'd just plug into that and control from the Watch?

- Better speaker - why?  I find the speaker okay as it is but surely not to listen to music on something so small?

- Torch - errrrrrrrr....can't see the point.

- Water resistant - I'll be amazed if we ever see this.  They'd waterproof a phone first.

My want list would be much more fundamental:

Faster processor.  I have no complaints at present but now and again there is a short delay.  It is being very picky though.

Better apps from the major banks, because they're absolute garbage at present.

Touch ID instead of the passcode.   Probably not achievable but you never know.

More prominent haptic.  Even on high I occasionally don't notice and I don't want to have to have sounds enabled.  Again though, I'm being very picky.

The big thing is the app developers.  Citymapper has got to expand outside of London, Manchester and Birmingham.  Facebook have got to get their app running instead of just Messenger (although it won't be long now).  Twitter need to improve their app.  Pinterest too.

The big one(s) is/are YouTube and having a Google directory/search.

I have to say though, I have been very, very impressed.  It is much faster and far more capable than I had realised on my short in-store trials of it.

Hmmm, some comments.

- Earphone out - why?  The iPhone is going to be in a pocket so surely you'd just plug into that and control from the Watch? [MAC] You can use Bluetooth headsets/headphones currently.

- Torch - errrrrrrrr....can't see the point. [MAC] Dunno, find the one on my phone quite handy.

- Water resistant - I'll be amazed if we ever see this.  They'd waterproof a phone first. [MAC] Already heading that way. I don't take my watch off when swimming, and it's also been through a 40 deg wash.

Also. This. You'll see most products getting better water protection, but actually including proofing standards will be prohibitive.
