It's been a while since I asked anything! Sky TV related.....

Would appreciate any help to know if this is possible.
Setup:
Tv in front room with Virgin cabling (have a TiVo but it on freeview channels)
Back room - Tv with Sky
Upstairs - tv with sky cabling (all channels)

Have an elderly guest arriving soon who likes their asian dramas of an evening and I would like to be able to set it up so they can watch to their heart's content in the front room.
In a nutshell is there anyway I can beam/stream/etc channels from the skybox to the front room where there is no Sky?

tldr - can you have a skybox in one room but watch the channels in another room where there are no sky cable?

Video sender would do it, just the tv with Sky attached will have to watch the same channels. Most Sky boxes also have an output for another room, but you'd obviously need to cable that. Never used a video sender so can't comment on actual quality etc.

Depending on how far away the Sky box is, the simplest way is to run a coax cable from the RF2 output on the back of the Sky box, to the TV you want to view on, obviously this isn't always practical though, and also means you can't (without a special dongle) change channels, I used to use this method (with a remote dongle) to good effect in my old bachelor or pad, that was before the days of HD mind, I just ran the cable from the box, out the wall and up the front of the house to the bedroom.

You could always temporarily tack a cable to the skirting and run internally so long as it isn't too far away?

Video senders are around, but as mentioned, they are pretty crap, are the channels not available to stream from anywhere on the net? you could just hook an old laptop up to the TV and stream stuff.

The ideal way would be to run a cable from the dish to the room you want the Sky box in, and simply move the Sky Box.

I rung sky today and said "as I subscribe to every one of your f'ing services and my HD box seems to be failing, can you do me a better price on your 2TB box than the £149 price on the website?". The reply...sorry sir, that's our mistake, your best price is £249!!"

Leave, call them back and tell them you want to cancel and that is the reason.

I cancelled when I moved and they bent over backwards to get me back, even a personal call from someone asking why it was I'd left. So I explained and they said we are so sorry will will provide a new top of the range box for free and extra channels and all sorts but by that point I'd already made the decision to leave and move to Virgin.

Never looked back it was a great move and no more worries about the kit not working and being charged a fortune to pay for the box that supplies their service.

I did the threaten to cancel thing and they called my bluff, they let me go so I went, switched to BT and don't miss Sky one bit.

Since actually leaving, they have made a string of phone calls and direct mails with all sorts of offers to try and get us back.

WhenI factor in the cashback we got through TopCashBack, I've got BT infinity, phone and TV for 18 months absolutely free.

On the other hand, my parents threatened them with legal action when their +HD box started playing up.

Sky tried to argue that they didn't own the box, and my parents did, and therefore it was not their responsibility, once it was pointed out to them that it was very clearly stated in the original contract that Sky did in fact, own the box they sent them a brand new one, they tried to charge them an 'installation' fee, my parents refused and cancelled the direct debit, Sky again relented.

It shouldn't be that difficult, if you are paying for a service, then Sky should ensure you have the equipment to receive it, I suspect they know if it went to court, they'd lose, hence why they keep out of court and send a new box if someone is serious.

Exactly and thats what I said to them, why am I paying to get a box fixed to view their service, bonkers.

At least with Virgin they own the lot and if there is a problem you log a call and they come out and fix it. It happened once straight after install for me and they sorted everything out no problem. But the same could happen today and they would pop out and fix it.

They aren't perfect few companies are but they are far better than Sky for these elements to me.

Thanks guys.

will give the video sender a miss

Did think of the RF cable - bit unsightly but I could live with it if it serves; minor issue that the box with ALL the channels (ie asian stuff) is upstairs (doesnt have planner/record service) and the Sky package downstairs is movies/sports etc not Asian.

I was all set to consider hunting out a local satellite guy to upgrade by dish from a quad to an octo LNB (I begged the guy at install but he was having none of it) and run a line permanently to the room but a much simpler solution just occured to me - ring Virgin and get his Zee TV added to my subs for a month (D'oh!) :roflmao:

My problem is virgin isn't available in my village and Sky know that, so it's them or nothing :(

Interestingly I got a text from Vodafone saying they are about to put fibre BB and phone in our area with special offers for new customers.

Never heard of that - might look into it.

Generally I am happy with the dual Sky/Virgin setup (virgin for phones and BB) after negotiating deals.

Point 1. How very considerate of you +++. Point 2 Can I be a relative of yours as my lot don't seem to give a sh+@!! :)

It's my father. Mum away due to family medical emergency and we don't want to leave him alone esp at nights.

I want to set up the room for him so that HE doesn't feel he is imposing on the kids and he can basically set up base camp in the front room as he wishes etc +++

A relative of mine has had an altogether new Sky experience.  Well, new on me anyway.

They had missed direct debits in January and February.  It meant they ended up owing Sky £164.

Sky called them and then sent them a letter.  They even showed me the letter because they wanted to know if it was legitimate.  In it, it said that if they called them before a certain date, Sky would write off the debt!

Sure enough, they did.  :roflmao:

Now that is what I call being desperate to keep people.  Has it happened to anyone else on here?

I'm seriously considering cancelling my DD for a couple of months (£108 per month now!) and seeing if it works for me!  Or, move funds on night before the DD is due to go, let it miss, do that 2 months running, and then they don't see you've cancelled the DD?  If it works it is £216 of very easy savings!
