Stupid question about phones and SIM cards

My iPhone 5 is getting elderly and generally useless in so many ways.  If I buy an iPhone 6 from Apple, the SIM can just transfer over and will work, right?

Just asking as the O2 contract I have is one of the ones that drops right down to a SIM only deal once the phone is paid off, so this seems to be both the path of least resistance and also cheaper than getting a new iPhone 6 from the networks.

(Obviously I'll be negotiating with Apple to get a one-off diamond-encrusted iPhone at £13.5k... wouldn't be seen with anything else, dahhhhling  )

Yep, correct. As long as the sim size is tthe same between iPhone 5 and 6

Follow up stupid question, if I may.

I have an iPhone 4 that is even more elderly and generally useless. I'm on a Vodafone sim only 3G deal. When I finally get round to buying an iPhone 6 from Apple, I should be able to ask Vodafone to provide me with a new sim on an upgraded 4G sim only deal and just slot it in. Yes? :uhoh:

Or would I be better off getting the phone as part of a new contract....??

I'm on Three, but they price matched GiffGaff to stop me leaving, sim only, £12 a month for unlimited data and texts, 500 mins.

I think the GiffGaff prices have gone up in the last year though.

GiffGaff do offer 4g in some areas now, sadly no one in Eastbourne does, except pretend 4G on O2 I think, which is normally slower than 3G in practice.

I'm paying £22 for unlimited calls & texts and 3Gb data

With the unlimited everything rolling in at £40-£45 per month for an ip6 it's a tight call.

Pretty sure a sim free direct 128gb ip6 rolls in at over £500 cash, so it makes some of the full contract deals look better than sim only and purchase sim free phone.

Mine is £39 pm ip6 128, unlimited calls and texts, 8 Gb limit (I use less than 25% of that even via the iPad hot spot pairing). It was a sales deal, but I'm sure there are similar out there.

Big warning is if you are direct to Voda and go with a chep Voda retailer deal moving the number from Voda to Voda via a dealer is impossible. Sour grapes Voda won't don't it.
