JonC
Nice; liking that a lot, bar those skinng-spoked alloys. I'd rather have the R though, as there's barely any difference in power.
Riz
But remember the GTI Clubsport is around 130-150kgs lighter than the Golf R
Torino101
So 290 bhp through the front wheels eek! Edited December 1, 2015 by Torino101
Riz
290bhp via the front wheels is easy work for the e-Diff (VAQ), I would say it could probably handle more, its not the rubbish XDS+ (braking) method of Torque vectoring, the VAQ is a very trick bit of engineering and it really works.... allows far greater speeds through corners and mitigates any torque steer. Its only when its wet it would lose out to the Golf R but when rolling they would be very evenly matched. A little more information here.... http://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-eurocars/vws-vaq-diff-explained/30560 Edited December 1, 2015 by Riz
JonC
So a "lightweight" GTi with Haldex basically, with R power and performance. Ooooh.
Riz
not quite..... think of it as a GTI Performance Pack with real aero added (noticeable around 65mph+), more performance, better chassis setup and individual interior items. It will be a limited production run between Jan to Nov I believe so numbers will be low. The Performance Pack (which I have on my GTI) has the Golf R brake system and the magical e-Diff, so these are standard on the Clubsport. The suspension has been revised along with roll and bias, they car is more neutral and in turn gives more front end grip, confidence and feel. (apparently) The e-Diff is like Haldex system but for the front left and right driven wheels, instead of braking individual wheels (XDS+) when traction is lost, it instead directs the power/torque left and right..... the key is to trust the system and keep your foot planed when going around corners in a Lewis Hamilton fashion and it just grips and grips. Torino101
the key is to trust the system Trust a VW system?
Cuprabob
From my understanding, it's 7kg heavier than the current GTI with Performance Pack, si not exactly lightweight. Certainly lighter than an R, which carries the extra Wight of the Haldex. Riz, you are a VW marketing man's wet dream:-) Edited December 1, 2015 by Cuprabob
Riz
ok perhaps trust was the wrong choice of wording The Clubsport is also using the Golf R engine so redline is now raised to 7000rpms 0-62mph down to 5.9 seconds. I think the Clubsport will shine through cornering and rolling in-gear acceleration. Edited December 1, 2015 by Riz
garcon magnifique
Much like the special edition Imprezas of old, it's worth the extra money in an entirely subjective sense if you're a huge fan. Unlike the Imprezas of old, if they keep numbers down it might still be worth more than the standard car when it's three years old.
Riz
I think the new MK8 is coming out end of next year / early 2017, hence why the production run for the Clubsport is less than a years worth of cars. I guess the Golf R400 will come in the new MK8 guise What Volkswagen need to do is apply the VAQ e-Diff to both the front and rear axels of the MK8 Golf R400 and sit the Haldex 4WD clutch/transmission in the middle..... proper torque vectoring like the GTI PP / Clubsport instead of using the horrible XDS+ method. garcon magnifique
I guess the Golf R400 will come in the new MK8 guise Ah yes, the R400. I detect a potential saga akin to that of the RS3, in which case it'll probably be a run out model for the MK12.

No amount of e diffs and systems that brake a wheel to stop wheel spin can replicate a 4wd system when it comes to a 0-60 mph launch. The S3 (or Golf R) clocks 4.4 seconds despite having to changing into third just before 60 mph. http://www.caranddriver.com/audi/s3 VW do like to make their fast Golf line up nice and complicated don't they?! Started with the Mk4 - four different power outputs in the GTi, two different power outputs in the V5s, the 4 motion 2.8, then the R32 Edited December 1, 2015 by Ian_C
ashleywater
I think you may find that an S1 is quicker to 60 than the new GTI clubsport due to its 4wd system If you havn't driven an S1, give it a go, it reminded me somewhat of my Mk1 GTI,due to its comparitively light weight and short wheelbase, great fun to drive, something you never really associate with an Audi
Riz
Oh dear... Volkswagen Golf GTI ClubSport Edition 40 prices are out. Excluding standard key options like bucket seats, black roof, 19" alloy wheels etc. I think Volkswagen have got the pricing wrong vs Golf R. There is only a £250 difference for the 5dr DSG models! Glad I ordered the Golf R Edited April 2, 2016 by Riz

NewNiceMrMe
I've just looked at the price list. It is weird. Is it standard specification and equipment levels that the Edition 40 beats the R on? It must be? Otherwise it makes no sense at all! Is it standard specification and equipment levels that the Edition 40 beats the R on? It must be? Otherwise it makes no sense at all! Not really, the spec looks very standard. It will probably have Navigation, keyless and winter pack standard vs the R just like the GTI has.
NewNiceMrMe
So it is spec then. Are those items standard on the R?
Riz
So it is spec then. Are those items standard on the R? Nope, the GTI, GTD and now GTI CS come standard with navigation, keyless on 5dr and winter pack I think. The following options are not available on the GTI Clubsport Edition 40: 8WB – front fog lights 7X2 – park distance control, front and rear (rear sensors are standard) 7X5 – parallel parking assistant plus park distance control, front and rear Badge deletion Tow bar As mentioned above, you can get good discounts (10%+) on the GTI/GTD and R's, I doubt there will be much discounts to be had on the GTI CS. If you add the good options like the following it soon hikes up the price. The 19" Pretoria Alloy Wheels only come with semi-slick tyres, so £2480 Black Gloss Roof is £295 Seats £1350 Edited April 2, 2016 by Riz
garcon magnifique
Seats £1350 I know we get used to the lengthy option lists on German cars for stuff you thought might be standard, but this is fecking ridiculous.
