Riz
I know we get used to the lengthy option lists on German cars for stuff you thought might be standard, but this is fecking ridiculous. I think Volkswagen are banking on limited production numbers, the iconic 40th Anniversary status and that hardcore GTI fans will put up the cash for the GTI Clubsport over the Golf R...... even somebody like myself saw sense and opted for the Golf R, its a much better everyday car at a better price when discounted. Cuprabob
Sadly VW shooting themselves in foot again or it's just the've priced or so they'll be rare like the MK6R / Rocco R. Still can't see why you would buy this over the Leon Cupra 290 which gives you 290PS when you want it and none of this boost button gimmick cr@p. This car should also have been 290PS standard and the boost button giving you 300PS or 310PS if you must have a gimmick. As the TV ad portrays, VW are returning to their roots but sadly it's back to the late 90s and the days of the overpriced performance models. Here's an answer that a lot of people won't like but I'm not applying to Riz because he's just a Golf fan and I think that is slightly different. Badge snobbery. Plain and simple. I'll give you the interior.☺I have to agree, it promised so much. I do like the aesthetics and think it looks nicer than the R but then again I think the GTD looks nicer than the R☺ What happened to the good old days when VW dumped every option on the car for a run out special like the "Storms" without increasing the price. Isn't the whole point of a Clubsport that they strip out all that sh1t to save weight?
ashleywater
I know we get used to the lengthy option lists on German cars for stuff you thought might be standard, but this is fecking ridiculous. If you think thats ridiculous try £2,700 for some graphite carbon leather on an R whatever the feck that is? Given the extortionate cost, I figured the cow must be fed on a diet of Diamonds which somehow manifest themselves into its hide when the time comes for a bolt between the eyes Audi super sports setas over the standard leather items a comparitively miserly £750 jeebus how do they do it? Cuprabob
One I noticed was The Winter Pack with leather and Xenons was £255, which is £255 just for heated washer jets. Even Dick Turpin would be embarrassed by what VW charges for leather / leatherette. To make matters worse the cloth seats on the R are horrible. I much prefer the cloth in the GTI. JonC
It's a car for the enthusiast and aim firmly at their loyalty and the relative exclusivity. I'm in the market for a replacement car come July, and I'd still opt for the R, though I can see them selling very well. Fair play for VW capitalising on 40 years of 3-letter brand loyalty. My Rocco is 5 years old in July and I'm currently deciding whether to keep it another year as it's a brilliant car or change it.

Cuprabob
5 years have passed quickly! What's on your list? They certainly have. I'm looking at an R, MK3 TT, S3, Leon Cupra 290, M135i & M235i. Nothing is shouting buy me at the moment and it's difficult to justify to my self the expense when my Rocco is so well specced and doing the job. Also, I'm getting old and can't be bothered with the hassle of buying a new car. I bought my last 3 cars from the same saleswoman and my last 5 bikes from the same sales guy, so once I have a relationship I tend to be loyal. Buying a new car can be challenging as many have found out recently! I tend to have the same loyalty towards businesses that treat me well both professionally and financially, but no such contacts in the car/bike trade, yet. I'd probably go back to the same bike dealer though.

eldavo69
I read a great comment on PH yesterday that FWD in a performance car is like sucking your mother's breast. Fine when you're young and know no better but once you get older you really should be moving on.
