Booster
Got a pc running Windows 7 as a standalone machine. I want it to request a password when it boots up. I know that you can do this when setting it up for the first time but how do you do it retrospectively please?
Andy_Bangle
Do you want a BIOS p/w or a Windows p/w? For a BIOS (power-on) password hit F9, F10, F2 depending on model of computer and look for the Password or Advanced settings, it will be there somewhere. Windows Password. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/protect-computer-with-password#1TC=windows-7 depending how secure you want it make sure you p/w the Admin account and turn off Guest access. Mac
Can I ask why you're applying a password to it? Is it just to hive off data for one user in a semi casual way...? If so, then it'll probably suffice adding a Windows password. Constantly amazes me that people think 'just' adding a password secures a machine (not saying this is you, by the way). It absolutely doesn't, you need good password policies and *good* encryption policies, otherwise getting past people's passwords takes minutes. Booster
Essentially, it is for a laptop that gets used infrequently (our accounts lady) but it has Outlook on it and I don't want the user leaving it around for prying eyes to read her emails. Nothing too sensitive on there, no client data - mainly accounts for the business and my tax information!! If there is such a thing as a password for Outlook, that would be great. Hopsta
If you're using Personal Folders (.pst file) to store your email then you can add a password to that when it's opened.

Someone nicks that laptop they have your accounts and your business information. I'd encrypt it - takes minutes, and protects you in the event the unit goes walkabout.
