Waylander
No thread for this already (bit surprised by that even with so many Applephiles) So - launch date. I have provisionally reserved this but wonder is any of you (as well as Mac I meant!) have player with pre-release version? Views? I'm assuming the version you get depends on what flavour of win7/8.1 you have so if you have Win7 Home you get Win10 Home and win7/8 pro/ultimate ? If so I guess I better upgrade my win7 Home laptop to Win8 pro....(*cough*PM_pending*cough*) :-D
Andy_Bangle
been using betas (no doubt like others) for a while, otherwise i'd be in no rush to upgrade for a month or two till more bugs / security holes are patched.
Tipex
I've reserved mine, nit sure when I'll get the upgrade option but I believe they are rolling it out over a few days. I'll probably wait as A_B says above, probably won't last a couple of months but I'm away for three weeks as of tomorrow anyway so will do it when we get back. Waylander
I was going to press the button on the Netbook but hang fire on the main-use machines. What noticeable bugs persist A_B?
Andy_Bangle
You want a list!!?? LOL Nothing you'd really notice for home use, however security issues are always a problem within the first few weeks. Have read and get to know some of the new futures: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/07/review-windows-10-is-the-best-version-yet-once-the-bugs-get-fixed/ http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/07/29/windows_10_bug_alert_start_menu_breaks_512_entries/ Edited July 29, 2015 by Andy_Bangle
Andy_Bangle
Interesting ... But there’s a very important security caveat that users should know about before transitioning to the new OS: Unless you opt out, Windows 10 will by default share your Wi-Fi network password with any contacts you may have listed in Outlook and Skype — and, with an opt-in, your Facebook friends! This brilliant new feature, which Microsoft has dubbed Wi-Fi Sense, doesn’t share your WiFi network password per se — it shares an encrypted version of that password. But it does allow anyone in your Skype or Outlook or Hotmail contacts lists to waltz onto your Wi-Fi network — should they ever wander within range of it or visit your home (or hop onto it secretly from hundreds of yards away with a good ‘ole cantenna!). http://krebsonsecurity.com/2015/07/windows-10-shares-your-wi-fi-with-contacts/
Torino101
Am I right in saying that windows 10 will be a free upgrade but at the end of year 1 will be an annual subscription??
Tipex
Am I right in saying that windows 10 will be a free upgrade but at the end of year 1 will be an annual subscription?? No, it's just free, or £99.99 if you don't have a qualifying version of Windows to upgrade from.
Waylander
Aaahh.....so that is what WiFi sense is. It is something I have on my windows phone but had no idea why it was called that
Andy_Bangle
Am I right in saying that windows 10 will be a free upgrade but at the end of year 1 will be an annual subscription?? No, it's just free, or £99.99 if you don't have a qualifying version of Windows to upgrade from. Win 10 is free to upgrade to (from a legal qualifying version ie: not an enterprise edition) for one year from today. If you don't have a suitable version to upgrade from or wait until this time next year, then you'll have to buy a version of Win 10 which will cost from 100 quid upwards. Torino101
So it is subscription after a year. Not sure I'll bother moving from my paid for 8.
Tipex
No, there is no subscription, it's either a free upgrade, or will cost you a one off payment of £100.
Waylander
Is there any work-around for the lack of Media Centre? I use the desktop extender on my xbox
Andy_Bangle
So it is subscription after a year. Not sure I'll bother moving from my paid for 8.1 As Tipex has said - there is no subscription. Between July 29th 2015 and July 29th 2016, you will have the chance to snag a free upgrade to Windows 10. After July 29th 2016, you will have to pay for a Windows 10 license. Andy_Bangle
Is there any work-around for the lack of Media Centre? I use the desktop extender on my xbox 360 Why upgrade - if your really need MC? There are many alternatives. Kodi, which is the new name of the open source XBMC, PLEX - great program, or MediaPortal which is the free version of MC. I'll let you decided which is best for your needs

Paul
I have two Windows 7 pc's (Home Premium) which should, but dont seem to meet the spec for the offer. They have both had all the updates, and Ive ran a couple of command prompt scripts off the net that suggest they do reach the correct critera, but the little update flag on the taskbar by the clock doesnt pop up. Mac
The rollout is staged so it could be you're not in the early rollout. Calm. If anyone's really stuck I can give y'all an ISO.
Waylander
Okay now CRP means something completely different in Medic-land - Control running Programme?
Waylander
Paul even my netbook managed to meet the requirements. For my Home Premium Laptop I had to install about a zillion updates and Lo! The icon was there. I did have to run check for updates a few times I am now about to pick Mac's brains and good nature to try to get an inplace upgrade to a Pro/Ultimate version of Windows 7 so I can have the Pro version of Win 7 on the laptop.
