patently
Put it on to charge last night, now this morning it's dead. Black, unresponsive, not even to both buttons together. Only previous sign was a tendency to get quite hot and discharge the battery over the last few days. I'm guessing it's a warranty replacement, then
Mac
Press both buttons for 15 seconds, release the POWER button keeping the HOME button pressed for a further 10-15 seconds...then plug it in to the laptop. See if it can see it then. Will do a DFU reboot which will rule out OS broken-ness.
patently
Thanks - done that, it's now on the cable to the laptop and showing the "no battery" icon. Will leave it there and see if it can take a charge at all

Mac
Yeah can take a while to get enough charge in it to restart. Do a restore, sounds like your OS was knackered somehow, probably a run away process of some sort.

Soulboy
You could always cook a couple of fish fingers on it if it happens again.
