which Tablet around the £100 mark?

Need a decent low-cost tablet for family general -purpose browsing after the demise of my Asus one.

With Argos now selling the Nexus 7 for £100 which is also around the price of the Hudl2 I wondered which you guys and gals would recommend.

OS is irrelevant for its uses although sadly iPad mini is not in this price bracket and no reasonably powered windows ones either.

Which version of the Nexus 7 is that?

We have a version 1 Nexus 7 and two Hudl 2's, performance wise there's nothing in it, the Hudl 2's are heavier to hold, but the Nexus has issues with the charging connector, and it's a very common (and annoying) fault.

Nexus (being Google) gets the latest Android updates before anyone else, but sometimes that's a double edged sword, although you don't have to update it if you don't want to.

On balance, I think I'd go with the Hudl 2, the Nexus 7 V2 might be a different matter...

I wouldn't, I understand why you say it, but second hand, no warranty, limited support these days and they are getting a bit slow now.

My mum has an original iPad, and the difference between that and a cheap Android tablet is stark, and not in favour of the iPad, compare it to her new iPad though and it's positively prehistoric.

Oh, indeed, there is a huge gulf in performance between the 1st and current generation.  There's also the difference between an iPad 1 and the new Android tablets - the latter being markedly faster in most cases now.  I was thinking more from an ease of use and I still think iOS beats every other tablet OS hands down in that department.

Had an iPad for a bit and I did like it but as this will mainly be browsing and maybe watching movies on the go performance far outweighs any OS consideration.

Even the I don't really share the iOS is superior thought having used Android, Windows, Windows Mobile, iOS (briefly) and OSX.

That being said I'd buy a 2nd hand iPad mini 2 like a shot. Nice form factor and buying yet another Apple device will please kids.

Unlikely at that price point though so likely get an Android one first.

Ultimately I would like one of all 3 OSes. Probably need 2 tablets in the house anyway

My dad has a Gen 1 Ipad - there are very few apps you can install on them now because you can't get a certain level of iOS on there - 6? i can't remember but it's a paperweight effectively.

As Tipex says though head to head reviews seem to favour the Hudl2.

Mind you I suspect I have a shed load of nectar points to use towards it and not very many club card points.

Nice to have a choice - will go play with both and see which one I (who am I kidding - swmbo) prefers

Completely agree with MrMe about the OS, as good as Android is, I'd choose iOS every time if it was an option, but the sort of Android tablets you can pick up for £100 make it hard to argue against them.

The other good thing about the Hudl, is that Tesco customer service is pretty damn good in respect of returns, if you have a problem, they'll just replace it.

I struggle to completely grasp that, if only because I know my own iPad 1 is still being used by the parents of a member on here, and another iPad 1 I had was being used by the wife of another member until 2 months ago when he bought an iPad Air I sold to upgrade to an Air 2.

New apps, I would get that, but there are still hundreds of thousands of apps that would surely run on it?

only if the apps are already on it, i presume - we wiped it as it was my Mums, gave it to him and common apps require the newer OS's.. which he can't install. Stuff like iPlayer - i haven't looked, this is what he tells me and he's not particularly bothered anyway, but he mentioned it the other day. maybe it is wrong, i don't have any apple stuff so have no idea.
