Why no Rugby WC thread?

I'm gutted but in all honesty we were never going to win. However, 2019 could be a very different story with the right build up.

If we can't beat Wales and Aus, we don't deserve to be there. I was more gutted about last week than yesterday. We lost well and truly yesterday.

You wouldn't have thought that pre-tournament.  The hype was ridiculous.

I've been passing comment about how average or over-rated we have seemed for the last 2 years and regularly been told how good we are.  It didn't materialise.

Just like the national football team - found out, big time.

  • 2 weeks later...

I want to pursue this topic further....

I'll get my stance on it out of the way first.

I'm delighted Scotland went out.  Petty?  Absolutely.  However, when you live as close to the border as I do and get the crap you do when England make a horrendous exit, you'd understand why.  For years I tried playing the "Actually, they're a home nation, so I'll support them" card and I eventually realised you will never, ever, ever get that support returned.  So feck 'em.  Out they go in quite hilarious fashion.  Desperately disappointed, tears, anger, the lot.  Bloody brilliant.  Get used to it, it ain't gonna change and yes I will now rub it in for the next week or however long I can get out of it. :roflmao:

The downside is that the Aussies went through.  Oh well.

Argentinia beating Ireland was a double edged sword because I always want the Argies to get stuffed, by everyone in every sport.  You can't win them all.

But...

Joubert now gets on with his life and the cost of that decision is quite stunning to think of.  Scotland have a moment in history they will now reel out at every opportunity.

I am impressed with how quickly World Rugby have reacted to confirm the decision was incorrect.  In football you'd wait months and then have it brushed under the carpet by them coming out with all manner of excuses because they'd be terrified of saying a referee got something wrong - because they'd get hammered for it.

In Rugby, no such thing.  I like that.

My question is this - that surely cannot be right?  The last few minutes of that game should be replayed.  It is a mockery on the semi-final line up.  Australia shouldn't be there, Scotland should.  So, if rugby is indeed the sport that sets standards - why can't Australia Rugby offer to replay a period or the entire match?  Would Scotland take a rematch from the start?  You bet!

Totally impractical, of course.  Ethically correct, absolutely.  Sportingly unquestionable, surely?

But hey, I'm glad they went out in such hysterically upsetting style. :roflmao:

In sport refs get decisions wrong all the time. We all know it's part of the game.

Slightly skewed because of having a Television match official in Rugby.

However just to be clear, the ref is not allowed to pass that particular decision upstairs. So yes he got a 'difficult ' decision wrong but that's all he did wrong. The touch judge wasn't very far away and he didn't disagree with the decision and they are allowed to have an input.

Incredible bad luck in one way but then again Scotland had incredible good luck with Australia making so many mistakes that led to Scottish points.

I always support the home nations but looking at it clearly I feel Australia deserve their place in the Semis.

Yeah.

Wrong decisions occur all the time in every game. If anything I feel Joubert has been thrown under the bus a little.

It wasn't an incorrect application of a law or a technicality like that, he saw a knock-on in real time and called it.

The fuss about it is home-nation ( well nearly) hysteria, nothing more.

We should move on....

My tuppence worth;

Every team suffers bad decisions Wayne Barnes crucified us against SA in the first half with some borderline and one ludicrous decision and handed SA 9 points in the process, we lost by less than that

In Wayne's case he was trying to settle the fact that we basically knocked England out as there was never anyway they were going to beat Australia and the 5/4 freely available for the Aussies to beat England was the bet of the year, Aussies should have been 1/2 on, suffice to say I shovelled on as much as I could at 5/4

Now I come to Scotland and the only reason I was glad they didnt beat Australia

Stuart Hogg

The first time in over 35 years of watching Rugby a player feigning injury football style and trying to get an opposition player sent off and fortunately the TMO there to show what actually happened

Nigel should have sent the cheating twunt off, purely for bringing our game into total disrepute, I think the only reason he didn't was the rule book had no actual rule covering this "Incident" as it was never considered part of the game

As for todays game SA at Evens with a 9 point start? The second best bet of the year and yes we went in again with the winnings from England getting whipped by Australia
