Torino101
Car colour also really growing on me. Didn't set out for a white car, but it's Mineral White not Alpine White. It's almost a pearlesent white. The difference can be seen quite clearly here, the M car is in Mineral:
NewNiceMrMe
I like both whites but the Mineral looks lovely with a really good wax on it.
Torino101
I suppose I've gone "off" flat white, because 50% of the cars in this country are that colour. It doesn't have the wow it has in the UK.

It doesn't have the wow it has in the UK. I think white is an odd colour in the UK for one reason - it appears to be incredibly cyclical. It comes massively into favour for a few years, then it goes massively out of favour for a longer period....before bouncing back. I guess the same might be said of most colours (other than black) but white seems particularly susceptible to it.
patently
BMWs look great in white. All other cars look crap in white.
M8CKN
Our carpark at work has both whites in it..a 320d in alpine white and an M4 in mineral white The 320 looks like an ex-police car. Very flat and boring.

The late 80's was a very white-orientated car colour era. Many Escort GTi and RS's, and Pug 205 GTi's spring to mind. garcon magnifique
Never owned a white car but I did desperately lust after a white Manta GTE. When reminiscing about the fluctuating fashion status of white cars, we should perhaps remember what an unmitigated fashion disaster the 1980s was in all possible respects. M8CKN
Not sure what you mean?! I had long wavy hair and a big earring with a cross dangling from it in the late 80s . I looked like a cross between Jim Morrison and captain birdseye...
garcon magnifique
Impressive. I vaguely remember looking like I should be in the band Big Country (remember them? ) in about 1982 and within 12 months morphing into some kind of androgynous freak with a flick, spray on jeans and what can only be described as a selection of outrageous blouses. By 1990 I had a mullet and far FAR too much denim. There are NO photos.

Torino101
Please for the love of god can someone have an answer for this. You can seemingly control virtually every aspect of the car to your hearts content via the iDrive. But aside from having to switch it off every single time I start the car, I cant seem to be able to permantly disable stop start...
patently
I seem to recall something about them being penalised on their greeniness score if they let you disable it permanently. So you can't.

Booster
Do what I do: The two finger start technique (ahem!). Push the ignition button and the stop/start button at the same time. Job done.
CarMad
I like it when the car is silent and the engine isn't running, makes the music sound that little bit better and sweeter to boot. I guess if you are in really bad traffic its a pain but I don't find it an issue personally.
NewNiceMrMe
Don't disengage it (and as mentioned above, it is not possible to disable it permanently). I did for the first 7-8 months of ownership but then trialled it for a few weeks and have never disabled it since. It is superb once you get used to it. I hated it to begin with but after a while you'll learn how to control it with the steering wheel, brake, accelerator etc. where it detects whether it should turn the engine off or not. It can be very disconcerting to a new driver of the car, I'll admit that, but you really should try to get used to it. jimdiesel
Dear me I'm actually agreeing with MrMe. My top tip is if you are at a difficult junction or round about just slide the gear selector over to sport. This disables the start stop and is much easier than fumbling for the button. NewNiceMrMe
I don't know how large the button is in the 1 series but it's actually quite large in the 5. I presumed they were all the same size and I've never had a problem pressing it off if I'm at a tricky junction. However, as Jim says, Sport mode solves that anyway, as would even the slightest of nudges on the steering wheel as soon as the car comes to a halt. I tend to do the latter as I find it easier. You do save mpg too. Most reports suggest at least 2 mpg saving over a year based on 12,000 miles. That equates to around £5 a month. It isn't going to buy you a Ferrari and I think the biggest factor is what type of driving you do. If I get stuck in a City it probably saves a lot more than £5 a month and it certainly does when I'm stuck in major traffic jams.

Will use that when I'm in her X1 at least 2 mpg saving over a year based on 12,000 miles. That equates to around £5 a month. Oooh, I could go racing for extra 30 seconds a year
