cruiser647
Over the last few months, my ESP light has been coming on and then going off again. Usually within about 10 mins of starting the car. About the same time, the engine revs as if the engine is cold and running rich. Sure enough, I see the engine temp gauge has not moved. The engine seems to think it's running on cold and applies more fuel. The gauge then moves up, the ESP light goes out and all is OK for the rest of the journey. Anyway, I bought a temp sender and after chaning it in 15 minutes all is good so far. No lights coming on and no dings to assault my ears! I have a few miles to drive tomorrow, so will see what happens. Seems the ESP light is used for other things other than telling me the ESP is knackered! VAG-Com was reporting the temp gauge was reading low! The EML is on and I'll turn it off nd see if it comes on again after a while
Tipex
ESP light on VAG cars acts as a general warning light too, it can warn you of a multitude of issues, but you need diagnostic tools to find out what they are.

ESP issue, faulty temperature senders, laboratory emissions test conditions detected, etc etc...
