The problem could be that the main router is still fairly strong across the house the phone never tries to look for anything else. They mostly stay connected if they still have a signal which it probably does which would mean you have to force it to connect to something else I expect.

You would be better getting them to use the same SSID / Passphrase if you can, it would be more likely to switch but even then it can stay onto a weak signal for longer than you might expect before it switches.

This is exactly what was happening.  Now I have managed to get them to clone properly it has completely solved the issue and devices now have strong signals everywhere without having to manual intervene at all.

Now that we are all on the same principle of the same SSID on the hotspot devices (except nnmm!!), anybody managed to work out how the green lights on the front relate?

I haven't paid close attention but I have noticed that the lights on the front are always telling me something different - sometimes the power light is not on but the wireless light is? Sometimes all 3 are on!

Can anyone explain?

I had issues with VM's WPS setup, worked first time when router was replaced.

1. Yes it should replicate the SSID so hopping between AP's is seamless.

2. Not 100% sure, what harm can it be to try, reset if it doesn't work

You say "yes it should replicate the SSID" - but I'd disagree if you want to know which Hotspot you're using. +++

Is there a way to make ipads / galaxy tabs hop to strongest signal rather than hanging onto grim death?

Just curious, the warehouse devises I deployed a couple of years ago were configured to use strongest signal available and not retain the one its connected to at all costs.

Later Android versions allow you to tell them to search for a better signal if its weak and apparently there are Wifi managers that will make the device use the strangers. There is a pro and a con to this as they can hop around a lot and cause a drop in battery life I suspect.

As far as I know on iPad / iPhones there is no such facility and it will hold onto the current signal for a fairly long time before switching.
