cruiser647
Walked upto the local Schmesco Express with daughter no 2. She wanted to get some stuff for her lunches. I sat outside waiting and there was a C class Merc. It had the right wheels, the 4 oval exhausts, the right grill However, I noticed it sat relatively high, as I could see the exhaust piping. Wierd I thought. Then the owner appeared. Got in and started it up. :roflmao: 220 CDi. He drove off. Then returned in a few mins for a bunch of bananas. :roflmao: Lazy feck! Torino101
Still to this day I don't understand why anyone does this. The worst are M badges on the back of BMW's it seems. Who are they appealing to? Joe public doesn't know or care and the car buffs who will notice this will instantly be geeky enough to spot your fraud and then think you're an utter dick.
CarMad
I'm sure I saw a C class coupe like this today as well. Went past and I was expecting the nice burble and nothing. He accelerated away at the lights and it was a diesel my little boy wasn't happy at all.
Andrew
There was a guy where I worked previously who went to interesting lengths to make his car look like an M3, even to the point of wrapping the roof black to emulate the carbon roof (car was yellow). garcon magnifique
I can understand it with younger owners who want to make their standard model look like the hot version they can't afford. They're doing it for their own benefit, nobody else's. A very long time ago I did it myself with an Impreza Sport - although I stopped short of the bonnet scoop and misleading badges... It's the ones who should be old enough to know better, who do it to new BMWs, Audis and Mercs. That I don't understand. I can only assume they are such failures in life they have to pretend to be something they're not. I don't even know whether they're trying to kid people they don't know, people they do know or themselves. I much prefer the opposite approach. Buy an old M5 and put a 518d badge on it. Much more fun.
Ian_C
There's a 1.8 litre B6 saloon near me with chrome mirrors fitted, gash aftermarket wheels, badged as an S4. Oh how I always WISHED I'd come up next to them at the lights so I could blip the V8 and let the non res Milltek purr.....
Tipex
An old neighbour of mine did it to an E36 318i. Had the whole car resprayed in whatever the exclusive M3 Blue was, full body kit, suspension, interior, everything, down to the last detail, steering wheel, gearknob, you name it. It was indistinguishable from a real one asthetically, even had a private 'M3' plate on it (forget exactly what it was but along the lines of M3 8DMW). He even had the engine worked on heavily, obviously it wasn't putting out anything like the power of a M3 but he'd had the cams swapped, lightened and balanced, intake, exhaust etc etc. Thing is, if he'd done it to an E30 he might have got away with it, the only give away would have been the rear window rake to someone who knew, as the E30 M3 was a 4 pot, the E36 wasn't and sounded crap through an M3 back box. I think I worked out that with what he'd spent on it, he could have bought a real E36 M3 and insured it for 5 years and have broken even. To be fair to him, it was utterly immaculate, always clean and clearly his pride and joy, but I think sometimes people get too involved and spend money without thinking about other options, it was after all, still just a 318i. Scotty
I'm feeling the urge to put an M3 badge on my Audi.

Torino101
Couldn't agree more. Would always want a sleeper. Not the other way around. Who wants all show and no go??

NewNiceMrMe
This reminds me..... When I was wandering around Enfield a few weeks ago I stopped at a crossing and noticed a very nice looking 4 series Coupe. White, blindingly clean and shiny, nice alloys, the lot. The lights changed to green and off it went. No noise to speak of and I glanced at the rear as it went..... ....and immediately noticed the M4 badge but knew it was not an M4......because of the single exhaust pipe! Basically, a perfectly nice 420i badged as an M4! I shall never understand how people who can afford a vehicle that isn't cheap have the desire to do that. NewNiceMrMe
Couldn't agree more. Would always want a sleeper. Not the other way around. Who wants all show and no go?? Agreed. This is why I don't have my 520d badged. It stops Ferrari drivers wanting to race me.
patently
I took* the "Caterham" badge off the back of mine. No-one would know, now. *didn't have one to put back on after the first time the rear end was completely smashed out of all recognition and had to be totally replaced

patently
I think you should badge it as: CaterhaMIII A 3 badge for the rear would suit perfectly, as that's the number of new rear ends it has had
Tipex
Badge it as one of the replicas, a Tiger or something, see if anyone at Caterham notices!
