Probably only of interest for the tradesman on here! Picking this up for my wife. The New Hilux. Haven't had a pick-up here for several years and really miss it, we have a horse and SA revolves around outdoor pursuits so will be used purely as a leisure "Bakkie":

Love a truck. I miss my Navara Aventura. Crap for heavy loads in the tray in reality (circa tonne), but great at towing heavy loads and a very competent all rounder. Epic off road.

Some tw*t drives around locally in a P reg Mondeo with bull bars on the front, I always think he's an utter c*nt, they are totally unnecessary in the UK, let alone driving around Eastbourne, I thought they'd been banned due to the risk of death to pedestrians?

Likewise, had 2 Navaras and they were both faultless.

Avoided the Ranger, it's the best looking truck by miles BUT the reliability reports have been horrendous. Also it's now 5+ years old and the Hilux came out this year.... (the resale of Hilux's here is also a factor).

Interesting; AFAIK we haven't had any breakdowns yet...the first was only delivered 3 months ago.  But some of them rack up high mileages travelling between our Suffolk and Sussex bases, as well as the inevitable actual farm use,  so I'll reserve judgement until they're a bit older

They do look good though +++

How weird, ive just spent the last two nights looking at the Ranger and Navara. Also, the Amarok, but that seems a bit pricier but,  according to reviews,  the most car like to drive. Havent looked at the Hilux at all. Was that the one Top Gear tried to nuke but wouldn't die? I want used, up to two years old with a few mod cons.

The Amarok and the Ranger are both at the end of their production cycles they have been about for around 5 years. Nissan has a new Navara that launched this year and also Toyota has launched their new Hilux this year also. The one I have bought above is the brand new model Hilux. Launched here in SA in March this year. Don't know when it came out in the UK.

If you're looking two years old then you won't get the newer launches so I'd look at the Amarok and Ranger.

I'd have another Navara in a flash if I wasn't living in London. Awesome Swiss Army knife of trucks that's both practical and economical in reality. The Amarok is under-powered with its 2.0. The Nav's got a great 2.5 V6. Both look great, but a premium for the VW just isn't justified IMO.

When we bought out truck we had narrowed it down to the Navara or Hilux. The Nav win because it seemed a nicer place to be with a more car like feel in the cabin. The Hilux seemed very dated by comparison. They were 2013/14 models though so I'm sure Toyota have moved the cabin on with the latest model. Ours gets a hammering off road in muddy fields, towing agricultural machinery and livestock. Opted for an auto as stick shifts had a reputation for blowing clutches.

The Navara is very capable off-road. Although it's long wheel base and overall length (5.5m in LWB), it makes very light work of very steep and gnarly sections of Scottish mountains. As you say Billy, the most luxurious cabin for a truck and very well spec'd (in Aventura guise). Mine was a LWB D40 (2nd Gen) King or maybe Crew Cab, (full, proper 4 dr) with the awesome 2.5 commonrail TDi (172 bhp) in 5spd Auto. Excellent residual values these light commercials. I miiss that truck. Went from a modded MkV GTi to the Nav.

Friend who worked for Nissan said they tend to kill the DMF, and that manual boxes aren't the strongest.

There's a bloke locally that drives one around like it's a hot hatch, he tries to beat everyone away from the lights, he dumps the clutch and gets a chirp from all four tyres, then appears to go backwards as pretty much anything else just drives away from him without even trying. :roflmao:

It might have 170 odd BHP, but it weighs God knows how much and certainly isn't designed for quick getaways.

3.2 tons IIRC. Great for eating motorway miles and pretty nifty actually in sport mode. It's surprisingly quick for such a large and heavy vehicle. It's no hot hatch though.

Probably why Mercedes is going to base their pick up on it.
