RS3 - Saloon!

Just proving a point!  Far cry from the 8L S3 with Recaros, S3 unique alloys, front and rear bumpers, and wide wheel arches and side sills like the B5 RS4....

Order an S3 nowadays and it has exactly the same seats, alloys, roof spoiler, side sills, front and rear bumper as an A3 S as Scotty mentions.

We looked at a similarly well specced black car that also had privacy glass, black optics and the same alloys as the Daytona car pictured above.  Was a dead ringer for an S3!  Was really low mileage, but dislike privacy glass and it was too old (14 plate)

It's not new that S-lines looks like S models though. That is of course Audi's plan. I just think this is why S models are now so familiar.

Here's my B6 S4 and a B6 2.0T S-line as an example. On that day I actually thought someone was driving out the car park in my car!

I actually loved the fact the S4 didn't have the chin spoiler and the (Avant) tailgate rear spoiler like the S line.  Stealth.   :secret:

Look how much flatter the B6 corners!  God the suspension was hard!

I remember the S line trim being launched the last year of the B6 in 2004 - this forum and the works car park were full of them!  That one will be a 1.8 T (or possibly a 1.9 TDi) as the 2.0 didn't arrive until the B7

Stealth = Boring as **** = same cars = omg it's a rep car = Audi. Honestly, apart from the R8, when have they done anything unusual or interesting?

I remember the original S3, and the RS4 - they had character. Hell the press loved them as different. Current range? Oh look, Audi has an understeering barge that looks the same but ooo, goes a bit fast in a straight line but still understeers into a bush.

It's just.....average. Ain't got no time for average.

Completely agree but AB said

'apart from the R8 when have they done anything unusual or interesting '

No suggestion of time.

They are a boring brand at this point in time and I can't see it every changing. High volume vanilla cars have built the brand so why change just for the few motoring enthusiasts that want more

I was agreeing with you Billy, that they haven't done much interesting for a long while.

Guess you could class me as an Audi fan-boy considering I've purchased at least 8 Audi's (A3's, A4, S4, A6...) new from the dealer with my own money, over the last 16 years. However, the only Audi I'd be remotely interested in these days would be the new TTRS, then only if BMW hadn't made the M2 :finger:

I think the A1 is terrific little car, probably the best in class, and I don't care if it is boring or not - it suits EldestMissMe perfectly for her use of it.

However, do they attract me as a buyer of an A6/A7?  Nope.

I quite like the A6 Avant from a styling perspective but, having driven one last year, I couldn't buy one.  Numb.

I'm completely off Audis now due to their blandness. I remember seeing Daz's S3 back in the day and thinking. I want one. Not so much now.

Of the current crop of Audis, I can only think of two I probably might consider. An RS6 in red or an R8 V10:)

Oh and whats with the Audi front grilles? They look like well worn George Foreman grills.

Aha, I think we're all agreeing, just not quite comprehending so.

The point I was trying to make is that I can't think of interesting stuff they've done recently, bar as above perhaps the A1 - suspect that's the car my daughter will be heading into.

They all kinda look the same to me. Dull.

In the real world, sometimes stealth and compromise is required though?  With the possible exception of Woppum, none of us are in the position to own a different car for every day of the week, and the space to secure them etc.  R34 GTRs and E92 M3s are fricking awesome cars, but in the country we live in, unfortunately they aren't always practical

I vividly recall the original S4, much delayed S3 and RS4 coming out, all very special cars indeed, a golden era for Audi, and as mentioned above a time when they put more effort into an S model than they do an RS now.  Hard to believe when the S4 and S3 were launched, Audi only built five models, A3 A4 A6 A8 + TT, how times have changed.

To look at, that original RS4 was more like a caricature of the A4 than a production car!  Arches pushed out, wheels pushed up, just like a BTCC super tourer of the era.  Sure, it would do doughnuts all day long on a wet skip pan with its permanent torsen quattro.  However the handling and understeer was old school!  Tiff hated it!

Honestly, down a country B road, a stock B5 RS4 wouldn't see which way a current S3 / Golf R went!  You'd kill yourself trying to keep up (either bouncing off the road on a bump due to the suspension, or "understeer into a bush".  The S3 is over a second quicker to 100 mph, the quarter mile times are similar, the B5 RS4 might accelerate faster after 100 / 120 mph perhaps?  I agree this doesn't make the S3 a better car  - as we've already proved above, it looks like a diesel!

Changing the manufacturer, a 208 GTi would destroy my 205 around a track, doesn't make it a better car though etc

TL:DR:

Clarkson summed it nicely when he compared the B5 RS4 to the Ur quattro in his 'Top 100 cars' video / DVD (cannot find on YouTube sorry - BBC usually claim copyright!)

"Your first girlfriend is always a little bit more memorable than the third."
