Throwing away the traditional wallet.....

My old wallets just broke.

I started looking around at slimming it down, to perhaps just cards and the odd note,  not carrying the coin cash anymore, just leaving some change at work or in the car, where I typically only use coins etc..

Then  I thought, do I actually need a wallet, or just how slimmed down could I manage with?

I carry an iPhone everywhere with me, yet have never even considered the Apple Pay/ wallet/ NFC functions.

I frequently see see people with just an iPhone case and a single card in its case.

I'm guessing Mac   With his love for tech, security, and all things Apple may have already done this, and particularly the other Londoners in the TSN community..

How are you getting on?

Do you bother with a wallet anymore?

Any must have apps?

I use NFC and ApplePay on my iPhone almost daily - but I could never do away with my wallet.

There are far too many places out of major Cities and Towns that don't use it and I'm forever finding a need for cash on my travels.

I use my wallet for receipts, membership cards (mostly loyalty schemes that I could probably dispose of, admittedly) and debit cards,

Finally, don't forget that not all retailers will allow limitless ApplePay.  It is limited to £30 in most locations.

Oh and if your phone breaks or you lose it and find yourself stranded....

Not to mention your driving license. I don't know about anyone else but I often need to show ID. Something as simple as using the local refuse dump requires proof of address. Yes you could keep something in the car or remember to take it with you but still..

If my phone goes down then I'd have bigger concerns than loyalty cards. I don't feel the need to carry more than a credit card, debit card and cash Sometimes I need a couple of ID cards but a few cards with the notes folder around then jut slips in the pocket without any bulk. The one downside is it takes a little while to stop patting yourself down looking for your wallet.

Yup, very true.  I use my driving licence on all domestic flights for ID.  If I got into the habit of not carrying my wallet, I know what would happen one day...

I do have one question about this in general.

What's the problem with carrying a wallet?

I'm a big advocate of all new technology but I also feel we're too quick as a society to let some things replace others when there is no need or we are too keen to drop something deemed old or traditional when it still serves a purpose.

A wallet is hardly a ball and chain.

I don't think we are anywhere near to me being able to leave my wallet at home anyway.

I have different wallets for different scenarios :P

Round home and general day to day I use my watch/phone for most things. Wallet wise I have a small MB thing that carries two cards, and a bit of cash. I tend to use this whenever I have to go into our offices as our door control tag thing doesn't work when it's right next to my phone. This has changed a lot for me. I used to be very cash-centric, and would typically have a couple of hundred quid with me. Now, I'd be surprised if I had more than 10-20 quid in my wallet.

As I don't go in to the office often, I actually for the most part have a wallet on my phone that has a couple of cards and some cash in.

I just don't need to carry much stuff any more.

I do have a 'full' proper wallet that I use when travelling further - has everything in. I just don't find I need it with me very often, so I don't bother carrying it.

As a side note, I've always made sure I have a reasonable amount of cash at home just in case I lose stuff. I.e. So I can get a cab home from pretty much most of London should I need to.

Never needed it, but hey ho.
