Apple M1 Pro and M1 Max - too expensive?

They do sound awesome but, yes, prices are high - almost £6K for a fully loaded 14"!! I guess if you're in to video, audio or image creation/processing then it will sound compelling. I moved away from Mac to Windows for work earlier this year and, if my job hunting goes well, I'm hoping to switch back again before the end of the year, so one of these could well be on the cards (at a modest spec).

6k! You could pick up 8 cylinders for that kind of budget, never mind 8 cores....

But you're right, in their defense, it's aimed at people who need to do 8k prores video editing and the like. It's just expensive even by Apple standards.

Good luck with the job hunting.

They are as cheap as chips in Oz, much cheaper to buy tech there.    Saved hundreds on a MBP last time I was out there.

Haha. I'm totally OK with Mac's sloppy seconds, so to speak.

I have a personal 10/32 Core, 64GB/2TB 16” Max coming. Thing is, tax takes a huge chunk of the pricing on these. Mine comes in at 4099 Retail. Let’s break that down.

VAT: 683.00GBP

Nett 3415.00

CT@19%: 648.85

Cost to business/me: 2766

It’s mad how much tax we pay on top of tax. Buying these as a consumer is painful. It’s also why the Windows laptop market is so low spec focussed isn’t it? Or budget focussed perhaps. It’s almost a race to the bottom in the Windows world - what can we put out at each price point and how can we scrape more margin?

My previous i9 16” 32GB was only a bit cheaper, and that came from Aus.

Fully agree, I managed to buy a shed load of Apple stuff when I had my own Limited Company, claimed all the VAT back which made the prices more appealing. :)

I have a 2018 13" MacBook Pro i7 2.7 Ghz with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD, its way more than I actually need, I even splashed out on 2x LG 4K monitors and the BlackMagic eGPU :o lol

Disappointed to say that, while I got a new job where the provided hardware is Apple, they provided a 2021 Intel MacBook  Still, better than the Dell from the previous place.

It's not client-side stuff that's the issue, it's server stuff. In my Intel gear I can quickly stand up a whole Exchange/AD/Office365 instance in no time at all - can't do that on an ARM.

Fair enough...   I gave up being hands on ages ago - esp. corporate crap, am now just a grey-hair advisor on sexy things in space, air and land based systems...
