paul_brad
Audi in Leicester told me today that the first cam belt change on a petrol 1.8T A3 is at 115k miles!? Do people here have it done at 60/70 just to be on the safe side, or do they know something this man at Audi doesn't? (Just in case anyones reading this who didn't see my last post; looking at buying a W reg with 82k, minus the 80k service. I assumed the cam belt was ready, but apparantly not??) Sven
Sounds odd, I'm not definite on the 1.8T, but usually it's around 75k (120k kms). 115k miles sounds like an awful lot. Maybe there's a km vs mile mixup here?
harry_the_cake
I did mine myself at 90,000. The actual interval for my car is 100,000. Mine is a 1998 1.8T (agu engine code)
paul_brad
Well no... he said 150,000 kilometres was the due date, which he decided was 115,000 miles. I don't think I would ever wait that long, but there does seem to be a bit of debate then, when exactly you should change it!
Drillslinger
Yeah, IIRC it's in my manual as part of the 120k km service But IMO if you're wondering about it, you should prolly get her done
RobbyG
I sell cars for a living and know from experience that it is very difficult to ascertain from the service booklet when it is due. I spoke with Listers Audi and the 115k miles that you have been told is correct HOWEVER they did tell me that they recommend people change around 80k because of the tensioners failing. IMO if in doubt do it early. Cost of a belt/tensioner and roller is alot cheaper than a re-build and loss of transport. Hope this helps.
RobbyG
I tell you why it is confusing...I have just sold a 1998 A4 with the same 20v 4 cylinder 1800cc engine but without the tutbo and the cambelt interval for both the A4 and the same engine fitted to the passat is 75k miles. Work that one out? Why should having a turbo fitted make the timing belt last longer? Surely the turbo model should be changed first/ more stress etc.
harry_the_cake
100,000 , 115,000. Whats in a few miles Just get the thing changed and forget about it.

NWMark
different car same principal, next door neighbours ford focus has 60k on the clock cambelt due 100k miles, his has done 60k, and yesturday the tensioner broke, engine cut out rolled to a stop. no crunch noises when it happened, so they think the cambelt has just 'slipped', head coming off today for a look!!! [/ QUOTE ] 150,000kms is actually around 93,00 miles, much less than the 115,000 miles quoted by your dealer. Be careful !! sidicks
