Ari
These were the famous Group B rally cars, basically meant to be "Formula 1" off road, ie the most advanced, fastest, most powerful versions. All the big boys had them, mid engined ultra high performance rally cars, the Metro 6R4, Peugeot 205, Renault 5 Turbo, Lancia Evo, FOrd RS200 etc. The cars were basically too fast for the circuits though, and big offs tended to be fatal. After a few spectators were killed the final death knell for Group B was when a Lancia went off into the crowd killing something like 19 people. Very nasty. Fabulous fabulous cars though... Ari
This was my fave, the Ford RS200 Best thing was that the cars were supposed to be based on road cars, so the manufacturers had to release a certain number through their dealers as road legal cars. So you could actually buy one of these for the road!
Ari
Oh and this was Audi's answer, the Audi Quattro Sport, a short wheelbase high powered version of the Audi Quattro that originally dominated rallying and brought four wheel drive to the scene in the first place. Note the very short rear side window, the length was mainly cut out behind the doors. Here is a standard Quattro for comparison. And here is a road legal version of the Quattro Sport that you could have actually bought at the time. I pukka rally car for the road, years ahead of the Mitsubishi Evo's and Subaru Impreza P1's. danksy
There was a Ford RS200 filling up at Tesco's in Aldershot two weekend's ago. It looked the dogs bollox, people were looking at it a bit strange when the whole rear clamshell was flipped wide open when the car was being filled up! It looked the dogs danglies! Probably the only Ford I would admit to hankering over!

I actually dont think its a dated shape, this was the one car I wanted growing up, one of my mates brothers had one when we were at school and we used to wait around until he got picked up so we could see the thing go (those days just revving or a wheelspin would get us going), real shame they only came in LHD

Domus
I remember the 205 T16. Their boss at the time was Jean Todt the guy now at Ferrari. I read an article about how much time and money was spent on testing how the thing landed after a "YUMP" It seems that it tended to land front wheels first, thus slowing down a wee bit. So after much testing and bending of cars they moved some weight back so it landed on all four wheels. Cost millions to save a few tenths..................Ahhh group B

[/ QUOTE ] weren't the road ones de-tuned though, effectively the rally spec but with lower turbo boost etc? from distant memory the RS200 were 350bhp out the box but closer to 450-500bhp in full rally tune do they still do that nutty rally cross racing? mixture of race track with some off road bits in between, remember that was full of 6R4s T16s etc

So now they use the same cars on (and off) tracks instead - Awesome!!!!!!! Tom
