Has anyone had a conversion kit fitted to enable switching to LPG , i have recently aquired S8 and it is quite heavy on the Petrol, approx 15mpg or less.

If it is poss to have this conversion any idea on cost , and does it affect performance ?

Any advice appreciated.

Love the S8 it is so responsive for such a big car.

Hi John. I looked into this a bit. Audi not recommened as they "have no data". I reckon it'd take years to pay for it's self unless you do big miles and if it goes wrong and you need a new motor shtf.gifEEK2.GIFEEK2.GIFEEK2.GIF

4yrs ago 'they' were talking of the tax being raised as per pet/diesel. Spoke wi'a guy who just had his converted in Barking (Essex). Think he said about £1400, but I'd thought it was about £1800 for a big V8.

I bottled out...

How many miles do you do John and how convenient are you to somewhere that sells LPG? They're thin on the ground where I live. LPG also seems cheap until you realise what the range of the tank is. We have some Volvo's at work that run on the stuff, it costs 15 quid to fill them but they only have a range of 200 miles, you could probably do 200 miles on 20 quids worth of petrol in these cars. So with these calculations for every 1000 miles you'd save about 25 quid, how much does the conversion cost? Even with your gas guzzler I wouldn't think it'd be worth it unless you use it a lot. Also don't forget you can notice the power difference. I'd spend the money on a performance chip and the extra fuel to enjoy it. beerchug.gif

What a smart chap 169144-ok.gif

I was told to expect about 20% less power. For every 100 mile on petrol I'd get 85 mls on the gas. I'd not loose the spare wheel, either, so I'd have had the cylinder in the boot too. But no one would put tyhe filler in the boot for safey reasons and I didnt want some monkey drilling holes in my car EEK2.GIF

An ex work colleague of mine had a Scenic that was LPG and therefore when he first started looking at A8's, he was looking for an LPG one - I've seen about four or five for sale. Although he bought an A8, he never bothered getting his converted (he has the 2.8), but apparently there are a few places that do it up his way (Darlington). You do get subsidies from the government, and you also get money off the London Charging scheme with it being a gas car.

On the other hand though, I had a chat to some people I know who work in the Petrol industry and they believe that if too many people convert, then the government will hoik up prices of gas.

Let's face facts you buy a 4.2 V8 for plenty of torque, power and overall grunt jump.gif. Why pay money to lower the performance. You buy an A8 to enjoy it, you can't save the planet as well, they simply don't go hand in hand.

The conversion allows you to flick a dashboard mounted switch to change from gas to petrol, so you can save the planet Mondays-Fridays and destroy it on the weekends grin.gif

Thought I'd resurect this with a bit of informed info.. I've just bought a 4.2 Quattro, and I'm shortly having this done.

Firstly, you need to find someone who can do it properly on the A8!! The system used is a state of the art computerised sequential injection system and will cost you £2,100 to £2,500 fitted.

You don't have to have the awful filler in the side panel, meaning a hole. A much less intrusive one can be fitted in the side panel of the rear bumper thats hardly noticable!

With the latest high tech systems, you'll lose about 10% performance, on a 4.2, so unless youre driving at the limit you'll not notice, and if you want to drive at the limit, press a button and your back on petrol!

The A8 boot can take a 90 litre tank across the back, still leaving good boot space and an LPG range of 300+ miles

On cost....

LPG near me at present is 36.9 to 40.9 per litre

98 Ron petrol 88.9 per litre at present.....

Saving the planet, I really don't know, but the equivalent of 40+mpg on average...I do like!!

I expect it to pay for itself within about 2 years, so if you aren't planning to keep your car long term I would agree it's not worth it unless you buy a pre converted car. If you do you'll want to ensure it has the latest system type installed, or you probably will get more of a performance drop.

Just my twopence worth having spent some time researching this!!

Regards

PaUL n

if you "setup" the gas ecu correctly AND have a play around with the audi ecu, lots of torque is to be gained from these state of the art cars, when running on gas.

we have a Saab 2.3 full on turbo, (aero 225bhp)bit of a heap to look at now, BUT still goes very well, but on gas, hmm, reduces the front tyres to slicks in minuets and as for (young)boyracers in novas, all they see is 'Tyresmoke'!!! Hehe.
