audia8s2
Oh No............. Car's leaking oil......again. Just arrived at work, parked up, nasty smell of oil and smoke coming form the engine bay. Bugger. Last time I had these exact symptons (about 6 months ago)it was the left hand bank Head gasket !!! Let's hope it's the same side, so I can blame Audi. If not I'm sure it will be another £1,000. Fingers crossed.......

Sven
Bummer mate... hope it works out okay... It's a '96 4.2 IIRC Paul.
PaulW
If it's the 32 valve 4.2 motor, most likely place for the oil leak is the rear cam seals. There are two on the right hand head and one on the left hand head. These covers are removed when doing a timing belt service and have poorly designed rings to seal them. They compress and then leak. Here's where they are: You can see the left hand one above, it has the hall sensor mounted to it. The one above is Right hand side...passenger side for LHD. If you look at the timing belt procedure on audipages, you will see how to replace them, if you do only the cam covers first (there is one more on the right hand side inboard of the cam cover), it's about an hour job in the driveway with a torx 25 tool. Not the easiest to get them in and out, but it's just two screws. The new ones are blue....so are the old ones, but they change color. Part number 077103487A, about $4 U.S. each. A lot cheaper than a head job! And if they did a head job, they had to remove these little covers to index the cams, if they didn't replace the gaskets, I could bet that is where it's coming from. Good luck!
audia8s2
[ QUOTE ] What engine do you have? [/ QUOTE ] Sven is correct, 32V 4.2, with lots of holes in it !!!!
audia8s2
Thanks Paul, you must have sent your second note just as I replied. I will have a look. The car's not booked in until next week so it gives me a few days to have a look round. I would obviously be relieved if it is that, I know they replaced the left hand side cam seals last time, when they did the head gasket, took them two weeks to find the leak before. (they did give me a 12 mth old A8 with 20 inch s-lines and TV/sat nav for the fortnight though, so it wasn't all bad). Thanks again Ben.
Sven
In that case I'd go there ASAP, ring them or whatever and make sure they look at these FIRST! (If you already delivered your car). No need to do a 'head job' if it's only these seals! If you haven't, take a look yourself first! I was already surprised to hear about head gaskets. They rarely blow IMO. Good info again Paul! [/ QUOTE ] Funny you should say that Sven, my dealer says they've never had an A8 in for a head gasket and very few for oil leaks. That's because they're all on mine !!!! It's only money..............
Sven
Sometimes they don't know their .... from their elwbow, or so it seems. The "been looking for a week" bit makes me somewhat suspicious. Another thing is, they have standard protocols, so instead of pinpointing the exact cause, they just replace stuff... Not ideal to say the least. Just proves you need to know what's going on, and make sure they know you know... (IYKWIM) And it proves the value of internet forums like this, and it's knowledgable members...
