Solar Sunroof

Hi everybody

I recently bought a A8 4.2 from 99 and I'm really pleased with it, however I'm not sure if the Solar sunroof works. I think it is kind a cool inside (mind u I live in the UK so its not really hot) but I never hear any noises.

How do I check to se if it works or not, Is there even a fuse??

Thanks for any help

P.S. I think this forum is great, I thought it was only old rich guys and me how owned a A8….Guys like that normally doesn’t thinker to much with their cars.

The solar roof only works when:

<ul type="square"> [*] middle vents (front and back) are opened.

[*] the car is in direct sunlight (roof closed or tilted).

[*] the engine is off

You may notice it when you enter the car, and the conditions above apply. It's not loud, but you can definitely hear the blower working.

It's a great feature, and the car is never too hot or stuffy when you enter. I really like it!

Never checked the fuse, but I suppose there must be one...

Thanks guys for the warm welcome and the speedy response.

I have the setup as you descried Sven, however I don’t hear any blower running. I have a friend that also have the Solar roof and I can easily hear his blower running so I suspect their is a problem with mine.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. It would be nice to get that feature running.

Hi Per,

I'd go hunting for fuses and relays first, they should be indicated in the manual.

If that doesn't solve anything, maybe someone with a repair manual (not me - yet) could post a pic of the diagram(s) for the solar roof. I'm not aware of any common faults.

The repair manual you mean? Some have the Bentley manual, but that's by Audi of America, so based on the USA models. I'm still looking hard to find ELSA, the factory repair manual, but that's hard to come by. frown.gif

The owners manual you should have received with the car, along with the service booklet and some other manuals (quick reference guide, navi manual etc).

There are some online Quick Reference Guides (in pdf) in "useful links" in this subforum, and for Navi+ also. The fuses etc. are in the Owners Manual though.

I have now traced and examined all fuses and have not been able to find any solution. I really don’t want to go to the stealers and ask them to fix it (I’m not a millionaire) I don’t even think they can fix it, they went even able to tell me how it was suppose to work in the first place.

So please if any body out there has any suggestions it would be very much appreciated.

Electrical testing

Functional description of solar roof

<ul type="square"> 207475-A87-0087.gif

[*] Solar operation is only possible if the sun roof is closed or raised (the solar energy converted into electrical energy by the solar roof is transferred to the vehicle electrics via contacts -A- (at the front edge of the sun roof) and -B- (in the frame of the sun roof)).

[*] Solar operation is not possible if the ignition is switched on, if the auxiliary heater/auxiliary ventilation mode is in operation or if the "residual heat" function is active (the operating and display unit -E87 actuates the isolation relay -J309 which switches the power supply for the fresh air blower -V2 from the solar cells -C20 to terminal "30").

[*] The energy yielded by the solar cells -C20 is converted in the solar operation control unit -J355 (installed between the sun roof headliner and solar roof) (e.g. from 6.5 V and 2.5 A to 3.5 V and 4.6 A).

[*] The electrical energy yielded by the solar roof is calculated using the following formula:

Solar radiation

x Solar cell surface area on sun roof

x Efficiency of solar cells -C20

x Efficiency of control unit -J355

Example:

Solar radiation --------------------- 500 W/m2

Solar cell surface area on sun roof -- x 0.21 m2

Efficiency of solar cells -C20 ------- x 0.13

Efficiency of control unit -J355 ----- x 0.9

Yielded electrical energy ----------- = 12 W

Note:

<ul type="square"> [*] Contacts -A- and -B- (on the sun roof and sun roof frame) used to transfer the generated electrical energy must be clean and free of any lubricating grease.

[*] If necessary, a thin coating of contact grease may be applied to contacts -A- and -B- (electrically conductive protective and lubricating agents are commercially available from electronics traders).

Checking functioning of solar roof

Special tools, testers and other items required

<ul type="square"> [*] 12 V test lamp (max. 5 W)

Test condition

<ul type="square"> [*] Sun roof closed.

[*] Park vehicle in sunlight

Notes:

<ul type="square"> [*] In unfavourable weather conditions, the solar roof can be illuminated using e.g. two commercially available 500 W halogen lamps. The lamps must be located at a distance of 500 mm from the sun roof.

[*] When the solar roof is illuminated using halogen lamps, electrical energy of only approx. 1.5 W is yielded (the fresh air blower -V2 rotates, but the air flow is virtually undetectable).

- Adjust air distribution of air conditioner to "dash panel vents".

- Open "centre" dash panel vents (close all other vents).

- Switch off ignition (operating and display unit -E87 goes dark).

- Air should be flowing from "centre" dash panel vents (if necessary, check by moistening surface of your hand and holding it in front of vent).

If fresh air blower -V2 is not functioning:

<ul type="square">

- Open sun roof approx. 10 cm.

- Connect 12 V test lamp (max. 5 W) between two contacts -A- of sun roof.

- Test lamp should flicker or light up (depending on intensity of solar radiation).

If test lamp flickers or lights up, solar roof is functioning OK.

<ul type="square"> - Check cabling to fresh air blower -V2 (via isolating relay -J309):

The cost of sending the motor into your dealer to diagnose the problem should be minimal???? My vehice has been in on many an occasion when I've had a problem, for example the current the oil leak and never been charged for diagnostics. Or am I a long way form the mark?

Depends I guess. From what I understand you still have some dealer warranty? That may be the reason...?

IMO it never hurts to know/do as much as possible yourself. At least you know what's going on, and if you can do it yourself you save xx per hour in labour... wink.gif
