drpellypo
Those of you who watch TG, would have seen this on the 'race the pigeon' feature. Pioneer, in my opinion, are one of the top ICE manfacturers, and I've had their products in my car far, ooh, well forever! I had a CD ROM type Pioneer Sat Nav in previously, but always wanted a) something that played MP3's (toyed with the idea of an IPOD) and b) a seperate DVD player. The total sum of which would have cost at least a grand, more than that if I'd wanted something decent. Then I saw the AVIC-X1. A DVD player, high end sat nav system, and MP3 player, all rolled into one, single DIN unit. And all for less than 1500 quid. Marevellous! I thought.. this looks like the mutts nuts. And let me tell you, it is! The navigation features of this unit are absolutely fantastic. The usual coverage of UK, Europe, and some other places, as well as stacks and stacks of POI's, make travelling just about anywhere a breeze. This coupled with the TMC function, which will alert you of upcoming traffic problems, and divert you accordingly, takes every single last inch of hassle out of driving. The nav function presents you with several views. Map, which diplays you as an arrow on top of a map of where you are, Mixed, which shows on the right of the screen what your next manouvre will be (such as a roundabout in 300 yards etc), st list, which displays a list of upcoming streets, and their distance away, and av status, which allows you to view radio station, MP3 track list, and/or CD track lists. An additional unit, the reversing camera, plugs into the hideaway box, and automatically switches on when you select reverse gear, or can be turned on manually, by selecting camera view (useful if you're towing, and you want to keep an eye on what's behind you). All these thing sput together, makes for a feature packed unit that's easy to use, incredibly useful, and has a coolness factor of 100. If you're looking for a high end sat nav product, with a dvd player, and cd/mp3 player built in, the XVIC-X1 will not dissapoint! I know the point of reviewing is to give a view of both sides, good and bad, but I really cannot fault this unit one bit, not a sausage.

drpellypo
try Here if ya haven't already bought it. I got mine from there and their customer service was excellent. They don't use citylink either, which is a very good reason to go with them, cos I've personally had sooo many bad experiences with CL. They use mainly Securicor Omega, who seem much much better. GCab
Maybe they should sell the thing to CityLink then!

essexr32
i'll post pic's of mine had i 2 weks after i got the car and in london can be a god send. What i do is aim the car ain the gerenral direction, enter the destination and off we go. Don't forget the compass!! Why? Well if your lost, just take a road in the general direction using the compass to know you are going in the right direction. the thinga re-routes you and gets you back on track. But it will only use the inner roads if you teach it to do so by using the roads once it is programmed a route, then it will remember that ou do enjoy that route. essexr32
Hmm!!!, I did post a few pic's in another post. They wer'nt that good. but i'll try and find them. drpellypo, i have the 6500, i think its great also. When i first got it i pogrammed all my locations, but only use it when i'm lost now. As i tested routes i currently use, i found it would take main roads only, once i started to take side roads on my route it remembered them and on selecting the route next time, it gave me the option to the route i showed it. This will only work if you complete the route for its memory. One question i have is the PC Card that fits in the Satnav disc slot. I know this can be used to store screen savers etc, but what else can it do and what pc card does it use.

drpellypo
I've actually found the X1 to take me up sideroads I didn't even no existed, on routes I've been doing for years! Not sure what you mean about the PC slot? I know you can make a CD rom with pictures on it, and set these as your background. But I know of no other feature.. and I actually read the handbook! bazza_g
I've pretty much decided to get me one of these AVIC-X1 DVD navi thingys - but have a few questions I hope you can help me with .... - Will my 6 disc changer from the R32 Delta unit work with it - does some kind of adaptor lead exist ? - They are going for some very attractive prices on ebay at the moment - between £600-£1k - has anyone purchased one through ebay ? - Did you fit it yourself or get a pro to do it ? ta! essexr32
I got a pro to do it, as i did not want to fiddle around fitting the sensors for gps in the front bumper etc. I have never bought an expensive item on ebay, but if you do go meet the person and then look at it then do the deal. Doubt the six disc will work with it

[/ QUOTE ] I've done some expensive deals on eBay and haven't done this. As long as they have a good rating and you make the transaction through eBay and not "off auction" you are completely safe. Just check what their returns policy and feedback is and don't worry about it.

[/ QUOTE ] The changer input is a standard BUS connection, but there's a chance Pioneer have blueprinted the hideaway box, so it will only work with their changers. I'm sure a quick call to Pioneer or your stockists will clear it up though. Don;t even try to fit it yourself, cos if something goes wrong, you've got no comeback. The GPS sensor doesn't go in the bumper (I don't know how it possibly could.. as it needs line of sight to the sky), rather goes on your dash, or if ya really really want to do what Pioneer suggest, on your roof (although there's not much point, and it looks stupid) As for ebay, that price will be a grey import. Personally, I wouldn;t touch it, especially with nav being locale specific, and seeing as the the rrp for these is well over 2k. I got mine off the web, but from a UK stockist. Paid £1469 for it (sorry to the person who has one of these six months old for sale in classifieds!)
Mo-S3
Have a look in my gallery for some installation pictures of my sat nav system. I installed it myself without any problem. countduckula55
Hi. Does it make a difference if the GPS antenna is installed on the back shelf or should it go on the outside of the car?? I thought of putting it on the rear shelf out of the way and don't really fancy it on the top of the car or on the boot as the instructions tell you to do! Also, is there a way of introducing speed camera locations in to this thing like the tomtom go?? Thanks.
biffta
Ok so the X1 is great product but what about security? I assume it doesnt have a "face off"? Whats to stop someone knicking it???
