Cam advice please?

I've got a 2.0 8V Golf Cabriolet that I've already had slightly moddified (PiperX induction, Milltek cat-back and engine remap). It's been rolling roaded at AMD at 142bhp@5550rpm, 148lb/ft @3300rpm, pretty nice, smooth torque curve.

I was wanting to find out wether people would recommend getting the camshaft changed and if so, what to go for.

AMD are offering a "Shrick Camshaft", but provide no details on what sort of change should be expected from that.

I'm very conscious that some wilder cams can leave the car just bleeding fuel and much lower in torque at low revs for the sake of lots of torque higher in the rev range and the ability to rev a lot higher. I don't want this.

I'm looking for a cam that will keep the low-end grunt that makes the 8v so comfortable and relatively frugal to drive normally, but would like it to be able to rev a bit more freely and slightly higher up the rev range when I want it to.

What are people experiences with cam changes in thw 2.0 8v and in particular the Shrick cam as offered by AMD?

Any advice / info appreciated!

TSR - I presume is Tim Styles Racing - so should be a good product, but might have everythign at high revs for track use.

Nick Sarran (I think thats how its spelt) might be another unles I am day dreaming here.

Could try Dubsport although I think they usually do whole engine swaps.

I'm not sure about the 2.0l 8v, but my Bruv ran a MkII 1.8 8v with a Kent Cam (Fast Road). Its still in the car but he sold it a couple of months a go to a friend!

He put the Cam in about 5 years ago and its been fine ever since. Had the head skimmed a wee bit, both for a compression increase and to ensure a totally flat surface.

I can tell you that for a 280k miles plus engine / head with Cam upgrade it pulled very well all the way to about 7250 rpms (up from 6500ish as std) and made for a pretty quick car considering it only had the head work and exhaust / filter to boost power!

Std it was 112bhp and with Cam / Exhaust / Filter it was running about 130 bhp, which doesn't seem a lot but was enough to put a smile on you face in a 20 year old car in this condition (minted!!)

Here are some pics of the car (its a 1984 car!!)

Thanks guys.

Like I said, not looking for loads of extra revs. As standard the 2.0 8v revs to about 5600, you can rev it further, but the torque drops off WAY before that. Starts dropping before 5000rpm and it's got nothing after 5500rpm really. Would like it to be able to rev to 6200rpm or at least somewhere over 6000rpm, but unlikely to push it up there that much, hence why I wan tot find out if it's possible to get something that'll get me near those sorts of revs without losing low-end "grunt" (and economy).

This is NOT a track car (it's a convertible!)... just like to have something that soudns and performs nicely - purely for road use.

No ideas on what the Schrick cam from AMD (Bicester) is like? I was told this was the forum for AMD advice...

thanks,

Chris

IT is usually the forum for any advice, not any specific maufacturer.

I think there are a couple of folks with R32s running with different cams from AMD, you could try asking in the R32 forum or send Fatcat a PM as i know he is runnign different cams.

Shrick cams are well known in the business, but to be honest I have no idea whether they are focussed on track or road use. I would say that TSR is probably one of the better bets for a useable road cam, when compared to a kent cam which is developed for track, but the best way is to call TSR and kent cams and see what they say.

TSR are VAG engine upgrade specialists so should be good for advice.

The Kent Cam my bruv was running was totally suited for Road use. It was very well mannered, easy to drive everyday and gave more HP and Torque where needed. Having driven it plenty of times I can say without any doubt that it was well worth the money and a very good choice.

It wasn't one of the Track or Rally cams that live at the high end of the revs and chug away when idling - granted idle was affected a wee bit but nothing to worry about and in no way caused you to adapt how you drove the car.

But this is just one view on a certain Cam, there are plenty of others out there so shop about - but don't discount it, they do make a difference and without a Turbo, power / torque increases and going to be hard to come by with simpler mods such as Filters, Exhausts, Chips in a 2.0l 8V enegine!

it's already been modded from 115bhp, 122lb/ft up to 142bhp, 148lb/ft.... and that was purely remap, exhaust and induction...

Will look into that Kent Cam - was that on an 8v 2.0? Did he have it rolling road benchamrked before / after? Schrick and TSR also coming highly recommended though.

thanks,

I think I'm gonna go for the Schrick cam from AMD, but they're wanting £820+VAT, 'cos it includes "labour, gaskets cam, tappets and a new remap to take into account the mods"

The AMD remap is normally about £300+VAT anyway and includes before and after rolling roads, etc, so they're still changing an extra £500 for the parts and labour.

I've yet to find anybody who will give me any idea of the change in torque / bhp on the engine with a new, fairly mild (probably Schrick) cam.

I'm not looking for concrete guarantees, just looking for a ballpark.

If the engine nature is changed so that I suddenly get 180bhp @ 7000rpm, but the torque is <130lb/ft for the first 4000rpm, then the £800+VAT might be worth it for track days, but not for me.... on the flip side if it keeps the engine nature very much the same, sacrifices little / now low-end torque, but only bumps me up to 150bhp, even with the 2nd remap (included in the £800), then I'm also not sure if it's worth it....

What is a pessimistic / realistic / optimistic expectation?

Like I said the car already has PiperX induction, Milltek Jet and it was remapped previously, but the remap was BEFORE those current mods. Currently putting out 142bhp @ 5550rpm, 148lb/ft @ 3300rpm.

Any ideas / guestimates?

I know guys that have traveled from the london area to see him to get work done. A mate was looking at having some work done on his Lupo GTi - 1.6 16v - power gains from 125bhp to around the 175mark with replaced cams and stuff.

They actually prepare race and rally cars, but he certainly knows hiss stuff and can probably advise you on gains to be made.
