Philip
Not heard of it or used it, but looking at that american site I would say its one of those amaizng American products that DOESN'T do what it says on the Bottle. I May be proved wrong but I wouldn't use it.
cleanimage
[ QUOTE ] 5 STAR SHINE's main ingredient, PTFE, is one of the slipperiest substances known to man. It's this slick substance that repels dirt like crazy and keeps your car incredibly clean. [/ QUOTE ] The above sentance could actually be summed up in one word, "Cobblers". I have just been on the phone to a chemist in Sweden. And amoung other things, we were talking about American products because he is helping a company out there develop waxes, glazes and sealants for the European market. They have to be good and honest for the European market because we don't have freedom speach laws which mean you can get away with saying anything you dam well please, Instead we have the trade description act. Basically, he has been testing the best of the American stuff, and for want of a better word, copying the products! All chemical companies do it. You can take a competitors product, analyse it an find out exactly what makes it work... if it works at all. And then you do your own version. He told me pretty much the same thing that every chemist tells me... good quality ingredients make for good quality products, some products are better than others, but at the end of the day, a wax is a wax, a polish is a polish and a sealant is a sealant. There are no magic ingredients, and no one product stands head and shoulders above another. Besides, that web side is straight out of the Brad Sugars school of marketing. It's text book stuff... in other words, they use every trick in the book. We talked about another product called Glare (www.autopolish.net) which is a similar product with similar hype. We have tried this one and I have to admit that we like it very much. It is great for covering swirl marks and even severe scratching. We arn't convinced by the 5 year guarantee, but what do you expect for $35. I'm not saying it's better than 5starshine which I have heard good things about from my pals in the US, but Glare is one we have tested and know that it's good... And by the way, the www.5starshine.co.uk has nothing to do with this product. That's another site owned by Foggy's mate Stuart (of Toughseal fame). We found the polisher a little heavy but thats just personal preference.
cleanimage
I have just been informed that we have the 5starshine sitting on a shelf at work and one of our chaps has tried it. this leads me to believe that it's nothing special or else I would expect that he would have come running into my office saying "Dan! this stuff is really good! get me some more". Another similar product I have heard very good things about is Amazing Glaze, although we haven't tried it yet. their web site doesn't seem to be working right now, although it was this morning. So if you don't get anything, try later. http://www.amazingglaze.co.uk
Laffer
Thanks for the answers Danny I'll mull it over! As I live in the west midlands, I don't think that I will be coming down to you for the "treatment". However, I do have some m8's down your way that I have not seen in a while. PM me with a price for your best sealant treatment for an Audi S8 and how many weeks in advance I would have to book. Laffer.
cleanimage
Thanks for bearing us in mind Laffer! As for best prices... We were talking only yesterday about a special for TyreSmoke members, and came up with an idea. It had something to do with "The Worlds Best Waxes", which will be a option with any valet because we want to know what YOU guys think of them. but as you want a sealant and I wont be ordering the "Worlds Best Waxes" until next week, then it won't apply to you...sorry! But on the bright side, we do offer a upgrade on sealants to anybody who books in advance. Normally you have to book 6 weeks in advance, but for you I'll lower the time to 3 weeks. What this means is that you can buy multiglaze, and we will upgrade it to Diamondbrite. although this is not the full kit you understand. Just an exterior treatment. Okay, so it doesn't sond that good put like that, but trust me, you can make some pretty nice savings and we are already very competative. But really I need to know what you are after, a paint sealant or the whole sealant kit, inside and out. I also need to know what car you have, what size, what colour and how long you want the sealant to last... and how much time, energy and effort you are going to put into it. Really you need to phone up for a chat. As you are comming a long way, we will throw in either AlloyWax for , or Metalmate for £19.95 which is a really good deal as this stuff's RRP is about £65.00 (damn it's good stuff!) We have just swiched back from using Microfibres to synthetic chamois leathers. Obviously we tested them all and now buy the best ones direct from the factory. i'll throw in one of these for as well. They seem the best thng for paint sealed cars. I dunno why, they just are. anyway, give us a ring. By the way, is my favorite word!
Huss
Danny You should post those 'specials'for tyresmoke members, I for one might be tempted. It's a bit of a hike from Surrey but I feel the car would be in good hands. Don't quite know what I would do in Chelmsford for the day it would take to do the valet...didn't it once have a zoo? Not necessarily my thing but it's gotta be better than wandering around the shops.. My A8 is now three years old and although in excellent condition could do with a birthday treat, inside and out Let us know when you've worked out the details of the deal. BTW what's metalmate? regards huss
Laffer
Danny, What an offer It wouldn't be for a little while anyway! Maybe a month or two - but please remember this offer! We (me+wife) have some mates in Maldon which is only a stones throw (relatively) from you. It's been a while since we partied with them, so it's about time we made the effort! I'll give you a ring over the next week or so. BTW the car (which I don't have yet, still sorting out finances) is an S8 in silver - pic below. At this point I am only interested in the paint sealant (unless you can point out significant virtues for the whole hog approach). Which I am hoping will significantly reduce the elbow grease (& time) required when cleaning. Cheers, Laffer.
cheechy
Now I AM to far away to go to you (around 500 miles!) so can you recommend anyone 'up north' that you know is okay to use? I'm a little apprehensive based on the scare stories around the car being waxed rather than sealed and would want someone honest to do the job! Cheers. cleanimage
Well, I do know the guy from Edinburgh Car Clinic through various American detailing message boards and he seems like a really nice chap, and he also seems to know what he is talking about. You could ring him up for a chat. http://www.smartrepairs.me.uk/
cheechy
I might just do that! Cheers.
