Laffer
Yo all. Picked up the S8 this morning However in the last few miles home (stealer is about 50 miles away) the CAT warning light came on as well as the ESP (constant light) at the same time. Now the CAT light illuminates 'sometimes' after driving the car for a little while. The ESP light has not made a re-appearence. Already notified the stealer, they are happy to have a look at it/fix it if they can. However they are A) Not an Audi dealer or specialist and B) 50 miles away. Anyone else had similar problems and if so what did it turn out to be? The car is an S8, 1998 66200 ish miles with full Audi service history. The manual states "If the lamp comes on during a journey there is a risk that the catalytic convertors are overheating due to an engine malfunction (e.g. misfiring). Stop the car, switch off the engine and allow it to cool down." The engine is as sweet as a nut - obviously I don't know about the mixtures. Any help, advice or words of wisdom would be appreciated. A8Mark
Just got my A8 back from the car dealers on thursday. Before it went in it also had the CAT warning light coming on from time to time. Main audi dealer said nothing was wrong with the cat or sensor, the fault in my case is the rear oil seal on my gear box was leaking on to the sensor causeing it to read a fault incorrectly.... This is a main Audi dealer so im hoping its correct... Its been in twice now for this oil seal to be fixed and now its leaking again..... The car dealers going to get Audi main dealer to now fix it (which he should of done straight off)... Hope its somit simple for ur laffer.. A8Mark... Laffer
Hmm maybe it is something simple. Upon further listening (and in some cases feeling) The engine is misfiring occaisonally - sometimes the whole car shakes (but usually just a misfire). Sounds like unburnt fuel going into the CAT..... not good. Also the ESP light now keeps coming on!! Sounds a bit more serious than just plugs or coil(s). Also now worried about driving it 50 miles to the dealer - I'll let hime know my concerns and if he will take liability should he want me to drive it back as opposed to getting it picked up/allowing me to take to a local audi dealer. Sure has taken the shine off my new S8 I can tell you. Laffer.
russellfray
Bad news mate - I know how you feel. I bought a 2nd hand Jag a couple of years ago (still have it now, part-ex'ing in 10 days time). Within about 2 weeks of getting it I had to have front suspension replaced due to excessive wheel wobble at anything above around 60mph, a new seat frame that decided to snap whilst repositioning the seat, and a failed water pump that meant it had to be trailored to the Jag garage. Also a couple of other small bits and pieces. Luckly I had bought it from a Jag dealer and it came with a 12 month warranty. Otherwise I would have been looking at around £3,000 in the first month! You have to remember, whoever has just part-ex'd it/sold it to the garage probably did so because they knew there were things wrong with it, or about to go wrong. The only time I ever get rid of cars is when I know something is wrong or on it's way out, as that's when it makes most economical sense to get a new one. However... once you have got these few niggles sorted out (hopefully under warranty?) you will have a blinding car! After the few initial problems on my Jag were sorted, I've rarely had anything go wrong with it at all (couple of blown bulbs) and it's been superb. Recently on my Jag, the suspension is starting to feel odd again, there is a ticking noise coming from the engine, a tapping and rattling noise from the exhaust, a couple of warning lights intermittently coming on, and the power steering fluid is emptying on my driveway. So - off it goes to be part-ex'd in a couple of weeks time to be patched up by the garage, and on to a dealers forecourt! Russ.
Sven
In that case the misfiring may well be the cause. MAF can also create various (seemingly unconnected) warning lights though. Difficult to judge from afar. VAG-COM should help to find the cause...
Laffer
Anyone in the Telford/Shropshire area with a VAG-COM? On the up side I believe I have re-course through the AA. Failing that the car has a 12 month warranty, but the dealer I brought it from wants to do all the work However as I said before as the dealer is No Audi specialist or dealer - I wonder how they will A) diagnose the problem and B) fix it. What I want them to do is just tell me to take it to/arrange for it to be picked up by my local Audi dealer. Anyways I'll keep this forum up to date. Laffer. cruiser647
There's not much that is more disappointing than getting a nice shiney new to you car, and finding it has faults - especially after the thorough vetting it got! Sorry to hear about that, but the VAG-Com should certainly help - it is helping with mine! Good luck.
