Frodo
I have the two key fobs for the car and a plastic key. I understand the plastic key can unlock the doors, is this it's sole purpose?
Hopsta
stick it in your wallet incase you lock yourself out. Just dont leave your wallet in the car too
UBM
You can use it to start the engine, i think two or three times, then that's it. You then need your original key or a new key from audi.
Frodo
That was what I was hoping do you need to do anything fancy as it didn't seem to start the car.
Tomk
i thoought it was just a spare they used to make a propper key ?
gizze
It's a valet key. I always leave it at the car park with the guy to park my car so I can keep my originals on me.
whimsical_chris
The manual describes the plastic small key as "a spare key" The spare key it goes on to say should only be used temporarily if the master keys ( big fat folding ones ) have been misplaced or lost. gizze
Yeah but it will open the door but nothing more if the car has been locked by the remote and the imobiliser has kicked in. You must unlock the car with the remote (disabling the imobiliser) before you can use the valet key.
Frodo
Thanks for the info the plastic key seem to be able to open the doors and then mute the alarm, but will not allow you to start the engine or operate the radio.
whimsical_chris
:-( Hardly a spare key then is it. Had no idea it would do everything but start the car, I mean why on earth would you want that ...... ( mutters ) the Beemer one did ( /mutters )
Avus_Bub
the immobiliser is a transponder in the key , Surely? Not controled by the radio remote. I'll check the plastic key to see if it starts the car ...it looks like it may contain a transponder chip. cant see the point of it otherwise .........you've got two master keys. whimsical_chris
Agreed, cant see the point in it if it wont get me home if I loose one of the masterkeys. Cant see me taking them both out, so would have expected the little plastic one in my wallet to bail me out.
gizze
Yeah but if you stop the engine after using the normal key and dont lock the car with it you should then be able to use the valet key.
Waylander
yeah but someone give me a realistic scenario where you'll have the master key to drive/start the car but then lose by the time you've turned off the engine but before you lock the door. i am very disappointed as it frankly seems useless
Foggy
Well I'll give you a real-life scenario where it saved me. I had opened the boot using the key fob, all other doors were locked and I was loading up the boot with bags and then like a complete spoon shut the boot with my keys inside. Options... 1 Get a friend to take me 40 miles back to my house to get the second key 2 Put through a window 3 Take the plastic key out of my wallet, unlock the door and then open the boot using the open switch in the door. I guess I could have just opened the boot with the key.
peterb
[ QUOTE ] I had opened the boot using the key fob, all other doors were locked and I was loading up the boot with bags and then like a complete spoon shut the boot with my keys inside. [/ QUOTE ] You'd not be the only person to do that. I remember Keegs locking his keys in the boot of his Cab at GTI International last year. Luckily the roof was down and the keys recovered by unpicking the stitching on the ski-bag to gain access to the boot.
Avus_Bub
Yeah i've thought of that myself.......NASTY. Great to only pop the tailgate open .........not so good if you put the key on the boot floor and shut the tailgate
Viraje
Isn't the point of the valet key that you can use when the car is in valet? I assumed the idea was that when you wanted to hand the car over to someone else, (service guy, valet parking etc), you take the metal key out, put the plastic one in and off they trot. The key lets them do everything except use the stereo and set the alarm.
Avus_Bub
IT DOES START THE CAR Tried it just now ...opened the door with plastic spare key put in ignition turned it and the engine fired up no problem........So it does have the transponder chip inside. And it IS a spare (plastic!) key

UBM
I told you all so! My stealers are pretty good in Cambridge on the sales side. Trouble is - it will only start the engine 2 or 3 times then it does not work! It is intended to get you to the garage to get a replacement. I think it must be programmed to only work 2/3 times - so the dealer tells me! BE CAREFUL!
Viraje
Come on then, who wants to try this out? Anyone?
Frodo
I'll give it a go when I get back to where my plasyic is located, at the moment we are separated by 100 miles.
gizze
That is why it is called a vallet key, it is meant for valet parking, every country in the world call it this apart from Audi UK. When you leave your car with the valet they can park the car, lock it and then get it back to you, you must then use your regular key or the valet key will disable. I beleive that once you have used your regular key again you get 3 more goes with the valet key and the cycle continues. Also any decent theif will who may be working with valets would always take a car with teh regular keys before taking one with just the valet key, as it is too much trouble otherwise. So always leave your valet key when you leave your car in a car park.
