Punjabi-A4
Had the car up on the ramp @ my mechanics on friday and realised that one of my catylsts was going/gone. for the last week i had been hearing some rattling underneath the car...and also noticed a very slight haze of white smoke if i started the car up after a long time. once under the ramp i found one of the cats had something knocking about inside it...the other one seemed fine. My garage can replace the Cat but what i want to know is, should i replace it with a new one or should i be able to get hold of a 2nd hand one?? I know they are not cheap but can i just replace the one? Would VAG parts offer these or should i just get it from Euro Car parts. Or allaudi? for 2nd hand the car is a A4 2.8q
Mo-S3
Hi mate, when replacing cats u have to be careful with what u replace them with. If u replace them with 2nd hand ones make sure u physically see what car they have come off ie age and mileage. If ur gonna go for non genuine ones make sure they have got a TUV approval or something similar. Fitting not approved or non genuine cats can totally feck up ur ecu, performance and worse case ur whole engine. So be careful. Theres no reason why Martyn wouldnt be able to get these for u. Last word of advice would be to advise u to replace both of them at the same time in order to maintain the 'balance' in the exhaust gases and screw up the ecu. The new one will have more restriction and the older less, beside the older one will probably go as soon as the other one is fitted. anyway good luck and let us know how u got on . James_dj
can you not fit DE cat pipes to yours? or will that bugger around with ECU map?
Mo-S3
No u cant do that unfortunately, mainly for 2 reasons: it wont pass the MOT next time round and will also screw ur ecu up because readings r taken from the lamda sensor near the cats to control the emissions. Punjabi-A4
UPDATE: Had a look round and asked Martyn @VAGPARTs and in all fairness exhaust prices were not really their thing...but he point out that Audi UK had discounted then to £400+vat Each !! I checked with Euro Car Parts and third party one would cost me 229+vat each! So as a last resort i rang up a mate who worked for kwik fit!! i though hey it's worth a try!!..anyway he got me a 25% discount and i should get both cat conv's for £300 for both!! inc vat, fitting and a 12month guarantee. Even he was suprised by the price. Fair enough they are not OEM but as long he still works their in a years time he'll get them replaced even if their not damaged if i wanted. Anyway i'm going to get them put in tomm..and hopefully everthing goes well...i'm not too confident about the kwikfit crew at my car but i'll keep an eye on them!
