[Audi A3/S3] Audi A3 Crackling Noise - Speakers

Just got approved used audi 53 reg A3 2.0FSI. While driving esp after throttling accelerator hard, static like crackling coming from somewhere. It gets louder the more I rev BUT ONLY HAPPENS when car is moving! I can't hear it from right speakers, nor can a passenger hear it from left speakers, but it so so sounds like speaker noise.

Then it vanishes say around 5-10mins and then comes back later on and off.

It sounds like its comeing from centre region, console or handbrake but i'm not sure what near the handbrake could make a noise like that.

Questions I would be really grateful if ye could help me with:

1) Is there a centre speaker on the a3. There are 8 spkeaers supposedly. 2 on side pillar by dash, 2 in front door, 2 in the rear on the doors. A sub in boot on the left, where is the 8th. I'm trying to assess why the sound appears from the centre. its so hard to locate. BUT SO annoying .

2) Has anyone had this problem??

The car goes in for a repair next week but they are baffled when I describe on phone. It's hard to locate I know.

I'm pretty sure. It's BOSE and I do recall a mention of sub, nothing crazy like but I really do recall it mentioned on some doc.

That aside, im farily sure it wouldn't be that causing crackling. I had a 2400W system in my old 406, with 2 amps and subs etc and have experience all the sound problems you could think of. The noise sounds like a bad earth or problem with amp but I can't hear it through the front speakers and pretty sure it isn't the back set either. It's driving me totally nuts.

I'm getting that kind of sound too, exactly as you describe on my A3 2.0TDI. Do you have the Concert 2 headunit? Can you hear the sound with the volume up or only with radio/cd volume at zero?

Its just that on my way home from work I got the noise and wondered might it be coming from the cd. Its just that I don't remember hearing the noise while listening to radio or with radio on but volume low. ie that maybe the spinning cd spindle was making the noise. So I took the cd out and the noise stopped. Whether that was just a coincidence, I don't know. Hopefully the journey to work tomorrow wont see a re-occurance of the noise.

Fingers Crossed!

well i have the same problem with my radio (2000 S3). I think its a Concert2, atleast its bose.

I have the cracking sound only from the rear left speaker and it becomes louder when accelerating....... if its an earth problem, where should i look?

pull the panel out from the back and check the connections or pull the radio out?

Still continues with headunit turned off?? Guess I can expect to hear the sound again tomorrow so.

So I'm assuming with the HU off the crackling wouldn't be anything to do with dodgy cd spindle or with a short in any of the speaker connections be they left, right or the elusive centre!!

If its nothing to do with the sound system then I'm a little more concerned now! Don't want my dash bursting into sparks and flames at motorway speeds!! laugh.gif:D

Update. While driving home from work last night, the noise started again. I was moving my head all around the car (no oncoming traffic by the way or pedestrians for that matter). It wasn't coming from front or centre speakers, it sounded as if its coming from Handbrake!

My firend in the car the other day said he thought it was the handrbake too. It was loud over it, as soon as I touch the handbrake it stopped. But it is a noise crackle sound. So I'm confused, if it happens only when moving you would assume vibration problem right? but it sounds so like electirc crackle. Is there any electric parts in the handbrake? maybe the button electronically controls something.

I was going to hold off posting until the noise happened again and I checked once again that moving the handbrake stopped the noise but typically :-) the noise didn't happen no matter how much I drove around last night.

I will post back to confirm. Kind of an odd problem but hopefully it has been localised to a region for an audi engineer to investigate
