I sourced my problem as the intercooler hose needing replaced which was done the other day. Once on again the car was running fine for a few days until the other evening.

I was travelling along the motorway when i noticed the car lost acceleration ability, when i slowed down it sounded like a knocking noise was coming from the engine.

I pulled over to investigate and the car was running very sluggishly. There was very little power on accelerating and it juttered quite a lot.

Took the car to the steelers today and didnt get the news i was hoping for.....

They said apparently that a cam sensor fault was showing up on vagcom. When they took the rocker cover off they said that the cam was 'worn' and that it would need a new cam kit, new belt kit, gaskets and seals...total value of repair 1500quid

My question is why didnt this fault show up as a warning light on the dash and also how can a cam get 'worn' at 70k when the engines had a full service history and has never been starved of oil?

aup haven't had the car linked up to get the test codes yet but been down the back of the engine, bare with me i am only guessing but there is a moving part connected to the turbo and when you move it it sort a makes squeaky rubbery sound is this the VNT bit that all are talking about? it pushes down towards the floor???

is the vacume hose under the vnt where ya feelin down the back it feels bout the size of my little finger and kind of a webbed pipe just under the vnt where it pushes down.

took it up the hill where it went into limp the other day (altough car was fully loaded when it happened)and today went round t 4 k every time, did seem once to lag around the 4k rpm in 4th ... then up to errughm110 is before runnin out a road.

do you think it went ok cos it was just me and no family in? .ie- no load on the turbo. when it did go limp with em all in it would only go to 3800 rpm in 4th doin bout 55 60 up the hill

regards oil does this make a difference on the turbo? obviously I dont know the oil the previous owner used but if its been runing the wrong oil for the last 20k would this have done any great harm to either engine or turbo? i do know he filled up past the max mark

what bout this stuff Millers XFE-PD any good?

The oil is designed to (predominantly) protect the cam lobes of the unit injectors and valves, as this is where it's subjected to maximum shear forces. Having said that, the rest of the engine is also considered when oil is specified. Things such as cold start up, time to circulate to all parts etc. are all factors. A thick dino based oil could take ages to provide correct lubrication to all parts of the engine, and damage caused before that happens is gonna knacker an engine.

Also, synthetic oils don't sludge as much, and don't clog the piston rings.

I have used this for a while and seems good enough. Have just changed to some a little bit cheaper and that is carried in stock where i shop.

I am changing to the cheaper stuff and dropping to 5-6k oil changes as mines seems to rattle more once it gets above 6k

thanks to all who advised me on here ... will be posting bak when hopefully i have cured the fault. was also thinkin of a vacume tool to work the vnt, what pressure would i expect to get it to move to its full extent? and is there any way of damaging the thing under the vnt (bit that pulls the vnt rod down) by doing this?
