Who's driven the Nurburgring?

My first visit was a couple of weeks ago and managed (in the time available)3 laps.

Believe me, that circuit demands respect, forget going out there all gung-ho, you will come off worse, like any unfamilier track, take your time (like 2 years) and you should be almost there.

Unforgetable, great to drive and great to watch others at many vantage spots whilst munching on a bratwurst.

I'm going back next year without a doubt 169144-ok.gif

I've done about 60.1 laps. Let's leave the 0.1 lap out of it and move on! blush.gif

I've had approx 60 joyous laps at the place. JC got one thing right and that it once you've been you have to go back. My first trip was to tick it off as a thing you have to do. I now keep going back even after my ... ahem off road excursion! crazy.gif

I'm sure Fatcat thought I was talking it up before he went and basically hyping it but once you've driven it you'll understand. It's an incredible challenge. The track seems designed to catch you out. Some of it flows and some of it really doesn't. Some bits at first glance look the same as other bits but the other side of them couldn't be more different.

After 20 laps I thought I knew it. Then after 40 I thought I knew it. Now 60 laps in and I'm confident I now know it. This doesn't mean I know all the best lines and every bump but I can at least know all the direction changes, cambers, crests, etc, etc. "They" reckon you need 100 to know it full and then over a 1000 before you really know it. Sabine says she's done something like 15,000 laps. shocked.gif

I guess she knows it quite well by now! crazy.gif

p.s. I'll be there in 2005 169144-ok.gif

p.p.s. It's a public toll road so normal car insurnance is normally sufficient. You should check though although asking sometimes means they say no whereas if you don't ask you're covered! crazy.gif

znaika.gif Above is prolly a man thing, but FC and Scotty kid-you-not! It was said already that a few bits look the same as others, this is utter bollox, loads of it looks the same. As loads of it is blind crests, crest where visibilty may be 100+ feet. The speeds through these sections can be well over the ton. Dont be apllying none of the "Advanced Driving" mallarky of reading the trees line over the next crest, the is what was mentioned about the lay meant to catch you out (Adenour forst anyone wink.gif ). then to compound things, some parts over the circuit you can make an error, you think you have saved it and got back on line only to find the black-art that is physics creating havoc and hurling you towards the armco.

Is it scary

[/ QUOTE ]You-can-bet-your-sweet-bippy its scary! Thats part of what makes it draw you back. The other is unfinished business! Who here on TSN has finished their business with The Ring? You lost right? tongue.gif

I just wish I had the bottle and the ability to really take on The Ring. Until then, I'll pop over every few years for a fix!

What would you drive/ride around there in/on?

I've been round in 1995 on the way back from Italy when I did the 'Italian Job' here with a friend, so we were in a Mini. Now I know thats sounds boring, but this car was built from a new body shell, no compromises at all, 1380 engine, Arden 8 port head, straight cut gears, about £20ks worths.

wow, i just read through the site that xspence posted the link too.

it looks like fantastic fun!!

never knew it was a public toll road, or soo long.

i guess hiring a car is the practical option for me, dont think the cab would enjoy the constant twisties at speed. might give it a whirl some time next year beerchug.gif

I've often thought about going and having a couple of geriatric-slow laps. If it had been open when I came through in the W12, I would have been really tempted to do it then.

I kind of wish I'd taken the RS 6, but I always bottled out.

My cousin has been several times, he runs a business hand-rebuilding premium cars that would be write-offs going by main dealer pricing, renewing and renovating older performance cars etc. I think last time he went was in a car he'd rebuilt (Supra Turbo I think) for a bit of shakedown testing before he sold it off. Something like that anyway, all a bit hairy for my liking!

I get the impression people think once you go on track there is the need to go round the track like your Senna...but you can cruise round till you feel confident..increasing your speed...again only if your confident.

Maybe there is a section you like..attack that and relax for the rest the circuit and enjoy it...I don't think there is the need to risk all and go for that 'time'. Leave that for people that can afford regular damage to they're car and the obvious danger of physical harm to themselves eeek!!

Hell there are buses going round..people stop and take photos... I think its only a daunting as you make it.

Although I should point out I have never been I have read so many reports.

I hope to go next year but I won't be driving..

You prolly see in the small print that you're not covered to take the hire car there or Hokenhiem(?), it actually names these circuits. I get cheap flights from Stanstead to Hahn with Ryanair and pick up a hirecar at the Airport and use them on The Ring, but have an off and could be shtf.gif if you cant find some one with a trailer to dump the wreckage elsewhere that is UHOH7.GIF

The Norschleiffe is an ABSOLUTE MUST for any car enthusiast. It may not seem that way until you go, but JC had it spot on it's addictive. It is without doubt some of the best 13miles of tarmac on the planet.

Re scary, it is, and unfortunately there are a lot of idiots lapping the ring (I came round over a blind crest at 110mph to find a coachful of tourists on the other side). My view is that if you regard the 'ring as a public road without speed limits and no oncoming traffic, but exercise caution on the blind bits and try to avoid the temptation of the 120mph bits (it's bloody hard though) then you won't go too far wrong. Regard it less of a racetrack with excellent marshalling and more of a fast cross country blast and it's hugely enjoyable. Sadly, the temptation to perfect lines (as in any race track) is far to great, and I think everyone who is enthusiatic will push the limits and put the risk up.

I'm already planning next years trip smile.gif
