JPawson8
Further to my last post (re probs with revs on my Passat), does anyone know how we can reset the ECU without having to take it to a VW dealer (the earliest they can fit us in is next Weds!). It looks like there may be some codes in it from when the battery was flat and we need to reset in order to be able to drive the damn thing! It's a '98 Sport Turbo model. Any help greatly appreciated!
Gorrock
Well, you can reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery for an hour or so. However, disconnecting the battery can sometimes lead to the drivability problems you are now experiencing which was caused by your duff battery. Unless your mechanic has disturbed something, It sounds as if your car just needs a throttle body adaption. If you have access to the VAG-COM software you simply plug in the laptop and and run a 30 second procedure whereby the throttle body re-calibrates itself. If you don't have access to the appropriate kit then you can try this get you home remedy (does not work in all cases but won't do any harm and worth a go): Open driver's door and leave open. Put the key in and in the on position (dash igniton lights come on) but don't start the car. Wait for 3 minutes with the door still open. ** Do not touch the throttle pedal during the procedure ** Turn the ignition key to off and remove the key. Put the key back in and start the car.
