Windows XP and FireWire problem

What about trying a different firewire cable to the camcorder?

All Sony camcorders work with XP (as of 2003 onwards) but the fact you have two devices not being detected on a fresh installation with a new firewire board is surprising!!

If you lived anywhere near Sheffield, I'd pop over with my camcorders and laptop to see what on earth is going on. This must be driving you up the wall! sportifs2.gif

What's left to test then:

* Different Firewire cable (let's forget the iPod for now)

* Different PC altogether

* Different Camcorder

Do things appear on your USB devices okay? Does you camcorder take digital photos to a mini memory stick? If so, plugging in the usb lead should give you a "Removeable storage device" in XP's My Computer view.

Sparky, I live in Dore, so if you're up for a mini-meet that'd be cool.

I have tried a different cable to the camcorder, so I'm pretty sure it's not a cable issue. Also, when plugged in, the camcorder knows it is attached to a firewire port as I get a little "DV IN" sign on the display (this goes away when I press 'play').

I really would like to try the camera with a different PC, although I can't think for the life of me why that would make a difference, given that I've tried both on-board firewire and PCI card. However, it may help to narrow down the possible failures (maybe the camera is bust).

USB works okay (or did, anyway) as that's how I originally had the camera attached. The iPod too works just fine with USB.

Drop me a PM mate if you're free sometime. Dore aint't that far away so will be glad to pop over for a mini meet, and to see the R32! smile.gif

I can bring my camera & laptop for tests. Seems so odd that this isn't working.

Hope you sort it dude.

Just as a follow-up, I installed Linux on the PC and it too didn't see either the iPod or Camcorder when I plugged them in via the 1394 ports. All of the appropriate drivers were loaded.

However, when I plugged the iPod into it via USB, it was recognised straight away as external storage. Wierd!

I put the PCI 1394 card into my other box running Linux, and that too refused to see the iPod.

The only common elements to the failure so far seem to be the iPod and its cable, and the camcorder (I've tried a couple of different cables with this).

Still sounds fishy to me. The fact that your new card made no difference and the iPod isn't detected via Firewire. I very much doubt either product is at fault.

The common area of failure is usually Windows XP, but if you say Linux hasn't spotted them either then that is odd.

When you connect your device, check Device Manager. Is there a yello Exclamation in there anywhere?

Nothing appears/changes in device manager when I plug in either the camcorder or iPod on either the on-board 1394 connection or the PCI card.

I'm certainly beginning to think that Mac's point about powered 1394 card might help me with the iPod, but as that works with USB anyway, at the moment that isn't bothering me too much.

Since the camcorder doesn't take power from the 1394 connection, I'm thinking that maybe I should buy a 4pin-4pin Sony cable from Ebuyer for a few quid, just in case there's something peculiar in the way that the 4pin-6pin cable is treated by the camera. I'm really doubting that that's the problem, since the camera obviously recognises that it has a 1394 cable plugged in, but I'm struggling to know what to do.

Yep, BIOS says they're enabled, sparky.

I appreciate that the Sony camera doesn't take power from the 1394 interface, but I'm at a loss to know what else to try.

As a last-ditch effort, I'm going to order the Belkin board from Ebuyer. If it too doesn't work, then it can go straight back, but at least I'll be satisfied that its not some wierd power related issue.

Right, new Belkin board arrived this morning, so I plugged it in, plugged in a spare power cable and set off with high hopes.

Unfortunately, neither the iPod or camcorder worked frown.gif

Tried disabling the on-board 1394 in the BIOS and using the cable which came with the Belkin board for the camera, but still neither device would show up in the device manager tree (as anything).

So far, it looks as if, by strange coincidence, the iPod cable and camcorder DV port are flakey.

Sparky, I'll PM you about setting up a mini-meet to see if I can get any closer to the cause of the problem.

Trevor..

maybe the Firewire port on your motherboard you first tried was faulty and has taken out BOTH your camera and Ipod firewire comms side ... ?

hence everything since has not worked regardless of swapping hardware.

mini meet sounds like the next option.

That's possible.

Silly question, but is the Firewire cable from the Firewire port connected the right way round on the motherboard?

On some systems I've seen, it's possible to plug the power into other pins as it's not a block, but rather individual cables. If so, would cause damage to your devices.
