s4dreamer
It's a "10-1" block, Sparky (ie 9 pins and 9 holes, so you can't get the connector the wrong way round). PM on its way.
s4dreamer
I took my iPod back to John Lewis today and told them it wasn't working on FireWire to PC (it also has a bit of distortion through the left earphone), so we'll see whether or not they manage to find a fault. If they do, they said they'd replace the unit.

Sparky
Any news S4Dreamer? Have they sent your iPod away then?
s4dreamer
They're going to check out the iPod in the store this week. If they can reproduce the fault, they'll give me a new iPod. If not, I guess it's back to square one.
s4dreamer
Just wanted to let y'all know that my iPod was set off back to Apple for repair and I ended up with a (new) replacement iPod. The new one works fine with the powered Belkin IEEE1394 card that Mac recommended. I haven't yet tried it with the unpowered card as that is in my Linux box. I do not intend to try it with the on-board 1394 - just in case that's what caused the fault with the iPod in the first place. I sent my camcorder off for repair too a couple of weeks ago, so we'll see what happens with that. I'd just like to say thanks to all who gave helpful suggestions and advice on this issue. Sparky
No problem. The offer to test on other machines (as in mine) still stands should you not solve the camcorder issue.
s4dreamer
Thanks Sparky - in the end, I tried 3 different machines using 3 different OS and none even acknowledged the presence of the camcorder, so I'm pretty confident it's a faulty i.Link interface on the camcorder itself. If, however, it comes back NFF, I'll be in touch.
s4dreamer
One final update on this. I got the camcorder back from the menders today and my Solaris system recognised it straight away as soon as I plugged it into the FireWire port, so I can now get down to doing some video editing. Woohoo! Thanks once again to everyone who gave me suggestions and help!
Paul
must have been a dodgy oem firewire port that fecked them both way before you bought and tried all the other firewire cards.
s4dreamer
Yep, that's what I'm thinking, so I've removed the cabling so I can't damage anything else. And now I have more FireWire ports than I know what to do with
Paul
lol. ive got firewire ports and never used them. USB2.0 is quicker than firewire now anyway , i was led to believe. So i guess firewire will slowly become less used.
Chelsea Mick
[ QUOTE ] USB2.0 is quicker than firewire now anyway , i was led to believe. [/ QUOTE ] It is but only just. USB2.0 up to 480MB/s, Firewire up to 400MB/s I always use my firewire ports. My ipod, Sony digital camera and my Sony Digicam. you cannot notice the difference in speed between the 2. Both reasonably quick.
Frodo
I have read somewhere that Firewaire is actually better for sustained data transfer than USB which is best for burst transfer rates. Something about USB re-aligning or something.
s4dreamer
I don't think USB is suitable for live digital editing, which you can do with FireWire. Additionally, IIRC, you can get FireWire 800Mb/s ports now, although I don't think there are many/any devices which use this speed at the moment. Let's face it, for the most part, either of these is probably faster than most of the devices which are hooked up to it, so they are both worthwhile.
