Snail
Im just about to change my car stereo, and down to 2 choices. Either an Alpine 7893 (had in the past, sounds fantastic, and got MP3), or the Blaupunkt DAB stereo. Anyone heard the woodstock DAB 52? Is it any good? I've been told, that DAB reception, where i usually drive (south coast) should be good, so that shouldn't be a problem.
thorkild
a mate of mine just installed one in his beemer, and he is well impressed with it. i got a lift with him the other day and the sound is very good. dab is a nice to have feature with a few quirks. first of all you get more stations in densely populated areas than elsewhere, ie London has more stations than Thames Valley. secondly all the bbc stations kept on buffering or something. they would cut out every so often before coming back. i believe this is an issue with bbc transmitting with too low bandwidth or something...i remember reading something on this issue with dab a long time ago... if you are going for the alpine, there is a model called 7894 as well which is better than the 7893. can't remember the exact difference just that it made it more interesting... shao_khan
I have had a couple of Blaupunkt units in the past and always been good. Last unit I got in the TT though was Sony MEX5DI, excellent non-amplified unit with MP3 capability from either cd or memory stick. The sound through Bose or other amplifier is very good. Snail
Personally don't rate sony for SQ (just sold my current sony setup), although never heard any blaupunkt, hence why im asking.
mramage
I've just put Alpine in mine, very happy and MP3 playing is a real bonus on long runs.

[ QUOTE ] I've just put Alpine in mine, very happy [/ QUOTE ] Had alpine before, had problems with their customer service, and don't wanna go back, but their equipment does sound better than anything else i've heard IMO. Punjabi-A4
I've also heard a top end blaupunkt (can't rmemeber which)and it was a very clean sound...plus i reckon the blaupunkt might look a bit better with the red illumination and all..but also might consider if your gonna need a sub out? Snail
Sub-out is my major worry, as i only use pre-outs (front+sub) and the spec doesn't say what the pre-outs are (i guess front+back) Sent a coupla mails to car stereo outlets, asking for advice, i'll see what they come up say. Punjabi-A4
most likely front and rear but if ya only using the front pre-out then you can use the rears one for the sub...use the crossover on the sub amp?
CARACTERE 007
umm i never have liked the design of the blaupunkt units or the alpine ones.....too messy and confuesed for my liking...but the alpine would have the edge in imho sound wise,...depends what your after really sound quality or looks, for me its kinda booth,....the sony units are good, but stay away from the x plod jobbies as they are naff,...latest sony ones are kewl though, especially the ones with image allocation...wicked!....sorry im going on and on! Snail
Kinda liked the whole black facia, red lighting thing (like my console display).....but after discussion, it seems BBC DAB Radio broadcasting is pants, due to them using limited bandwidth for transmitting, so i wouldn't get any quality benefit there (Radio 1, and 1 Xtra were my intended stations). Also heard there have been numerous recalls on this unit, and the MP3 playback isn't great, and the unit has heating issues, so not gonna go with the blaupunkt. Still undecided what to get, i want the Alpine 7894 for its 3x4v pre-outs, but its silver, with blue lighting, which doesnt match the car. Had a 7893 before, and although had CD Text Issues, a good unit, great SQ, black facia, and amber lighting (close enough) My only other choice, is Rockford Fosgate do MP3 Units, with 4v Pre-outs, black facia, and red lighting, almost prefect, just never heard them before, soooo a trip to halford for a listen is on the cards. Anyone heard a RF headunit? ANy Good?
Punjabi-A4
I would have recommended the becker online pro...but that is £1500! i'm waiting till they bring out mp3 playback on there normal cd player.
Snail
Yeah, i heard becker and Nakamichi do VERY good stuff, and are bringing out MP3 stuff in the near future, just need something not, and only wanna pay bout £300.

peterb
[ QUOTE ] Alpine for me [/ QUOTE ] Me too! I used to have an Alpine system which I kept for eight years and survived 2 changes of car. I finally left it in the A4 when I traded up to the A6.

peterb
[ QUOTE ] you going to take me out in the RS6 when it arrives then mate? [/ QUOTE ] Happy to, yes, but Reading Audi and Ridgeway (Newbury) - I deal with Ridgeway - do both have their own cars on the road, you could get a test drive. I was intending to ask your advice on polishing/waxing products for when it arrives! Where exactly are you - Berkshire is quite large! I hope to get to the Windsor meet next week - see you there? finster
Have you considered one of the new clarion units ????? They are already out in the US and should be out here at the beginning of April... The US model numbers are the DXZ735MP and DXZ835MP and I reckon the lower spec one is gonna be around 270 quid... peterb
[ QUOTE ] I also use Ridgeway, Peter Little is da man, [/ QUOTE ] Yep, a good man. The RS6 is the third car I've bought from him in three years. He lives fairly close, too. In fact, he was considering buying the house I now live in. David Newman is also very reasonable. [ QUOTE ] he knows me as Bushy so mention me next time you are in [/ QUOTE ] Will do - should be seeing him next week. [ QUOTE ] Live near Wokingham, wot about you? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, well I lived in Winnersh until 3 years ago, but now live Shinfield/Lower Earley. Anyway, I gather you'll be at the meet tomorrow, so should see you then. finster
Yeah Von, They were the TS-135C's. Wasn't blown away when I first installed them, but when I installed my amp they sounded ALOT better, and when I installed my sub and put the hi-pass filter on them, they sounded better again.... Pretty satisfied - just need the new Head Unit now to complete my system, and waiting for the aforementioned Clarion unit !!!
TheVon
Finster, where did you put the amp (you are an A3 driver, right?)? So do you recommend the amp to me? I only have the Kenwood mp3 player unit and the sound is very nice at higher volumes, but not notable improved at low volumes
finster
Yeah - A3... Made a box out of MDF for my sub and then mounted the amp on that (on some "legs" I made to absorb vibration). So not lost a whole lot of boot space, just a corner, the amp fits nicely and there are a few inches clearance before the parcel shelf. Will take some photos when I borrow a camera from someone !!! Would definately recommend the amp, although my experience is only with the stock HU, in which I gather the in-built amp is pretty dire. I have got a Mac Energy 6000 amp - they are about 170 quid from Car Audio Direct but I managed to pick one up for 55 quid from a Maplin clearance !!!! The sub I got was 60 quid, so got quite a tidy system for not too much cash.... Like I say, just waiting for the Clarion HU to complete it.
