VW POLO 1.4 - gearbox / gear selecting problem...

Hi, I have a polo 1.4SE 2001 plate, basically it's difficult to change gears / no gear seems to engage smoothly, 1st to 2nd is a real bitch particularly when the engine is cold - I'm guaranteed that the 2nd gear will engage with a 'crunch'. The car hasn't been used a lot, only at weekends could this cause problems with the G'box oil? When I do use the car I have to run the car for at least 20 mins or so before things improve (the 1st to 2nd 'crunch' problem mostly goes away) but even then gear changes are difficult.

I have a used approved warranty that finishes nr the end of Feb, so I wanna sort this out prior to then - I've queried the problem at the dealers once already but they say there's no problem... I need some ammo so I can demand some action on the matter.

Cheers -

Hello and Welcome to the TSN community.

Sounds like you could have the pedal box issue common to the Polo GTI, is your polo a 6n2 model or the new 9n ?

If its a 6n2 it might be worth reading through the clutch issues people have had with the GTI's.

If its the case, do a search with ritey as the username and pedal box as key words, should help you out.

Thanks for the info - it's not a GTI though ( I whish!) it's an SE, I've got the car booked in for a service at VW in a weeks time so I'll ask to have this looked at then, I've checked on the forums and found several other possible causes - I never know wether to garages actually listen to all the details when a problem is highlighted...& wether I need to recommend the things they should look at in order to fix it.... I guess that'd be telling the experts what to do! : )

..Strangest thing, the weather has been milder this weekend and the gear changes though not perfect are a lot better than in recent weeks, I managed the first change into second gear without a "crunch", I no mechanic so I have no-idea what could be affected by the outside temperature - maybe the G'box oil?
