CarMad
Ok so this is only a small list of IMO are some of the best engines that have been on sale in recent years that I have had the pleasure of traveling in or hearing first hand. Yes the list might be limited but if you think there are better than say what it is. I know I will have missed out a lot. By the way we are only talking about the engine NOT the car it was in. Sound / Refinment / Power are key, the car might have been dreadful. I have limited to 11 and can think of a lot more .. what would you choose as you best ? I am picking the F1 For shear noise and power. And the Lexus as supreme refinement. You all have two votes each aswell. I haven't inclued Carrera GT / SLR or new BMW V10 as I haven't seen them first hand.
MattR32
Where's the Fiat 126 engine?
CarMad
Doh .. see I told you I would forget some classics. Just though it might be nice to have a heathy debate about cars on a car forum.. I could have doubled the list.. well anyone anyone any other recent engines that could be classics I have missed. MattR32
Only joking! M3 engine for me followed by the TVR straight six. I prefer loads of power but normally aspirated. Anyone can slap on a super/turbo charger and get daft power.
CarMad
Could agree more.. Forgot about TVR completely. Their own buit engines are damn good considering the investment that they have made on them.
bazza_g
[ QUOTE ] I prefer loads of power but normally aspirated. Anyone can slap on a super/turbo charger and get daft power. [/ QUOTE ] Agreed, thats why my vote went to the Macca F1 - a truly awesome powerplant Imagine transplanting that into my VXT <<crazy smilie>> Actually thinking about it I'll vote for any n/a engine that manages a specific capacity over over 100bhp per litre <<not worthy smilie>>
Lagoo
that will be the 3.6l Speed 6 engine from TVR then
xspencex
Its the MCL F1 V12 for me because its awesome power and relative reliability oh...and its two BMW M Power straight six's stuck together and they are pretty good too... If the MCL's engine wasn't on that list I'd choose the boxer six from Porsche... what an amazing noise and considering its size its got a fair bit of munch and flexabiliy... The GT3 engine is truly one of the greats it cost a fair bit too considering its exotic use of ceramics materials..100bhp/ltr too...can't remember how much a single engine is but it might be about £40kish..(don't quote me)
bazza_g
<<shocked smilie>> who voted for the Lexus V8 ??? <font color="#666666"> oops , just saw it was you CarMad - must agree it is a refined engine ! I didn't get 2 votes ?? </font>
CarMad
Me ! There isn't another motor on the planet that is more refined period. So it wins the most refined, it isn't the most charismatic or powerful but that wasn't its purpose. I wouldn't want to drive around with an F1 all the time I would have no license left. I used my second vote to go for that.
MattR32
How about the TDi engine in an Astra van? NOTHING is quicker!!!
Ritey
If it wasnt down to power or sound you know the A+ Series would win
MattR32
I had 1.3 A series in my 1973 Morris Marina. What a motor....!
Ritey
A very well used engine, even today, and the power that can be achieved with modern technology Still reliable and progressed well, will any other engine last as well?
MattR32
What do they put the A series in now then?!!
Ritey
Racing Minis and the like, no new cars are built with them, but you can still buy new A'series and A+ series engines. I believe the newest cars to have used the A'series, were the Austin / Rover Montego and Rover Metro along with the Classic Mini up to 2000 - although with the multipoint injection they were slightly different and some may say not as good
loddrik
What about Nissans amazing 2.7l diesel engine, regularly powers cabs to over half a million miles.
Mac
rb26dett out of the latter skylines was a cracker of engine. Rock solid you could tune it to ridiculous levels while maintaining reliability - hence you'd see 1000+BHP skylines.
rhyds
The "rover" metro switched over to the K series in 1990, and the 1275 A+ was used in the ledbury maestros, and you can get them as 01 Y reg cars.
CarMad
I put the the Skyline on after remembering a breathtaking ride in an R33 with Andy Middlehurst (Official importer of Nissan Skylines in the UK) as he lived around the corner and my Dad new him. Car was only slightly tuned not mad but Andy had huge skill from his circuit racing days. The reg of the car was R33GTR and was an official import.
