E36 323i Central Locking

Hi folks

My 1998 BMW 323i SE (4 door) has central locking but (sadly) not remote control central locking.

However even the central locking does not seem to be working properly. When I lock the car from the passenger door the driver's door does not lock. All the other doors and the boot (trunk) do lock, but frustratingly the drivers' door needs to be locked separately.

The same thing applies when I lock the car at the boot (trunk)... all the doors except the driver's door lock.

It works OK if I lock the car at the driver's door but not at the other locks.

So I checked the manual and took the car to a BMW garage. The mechanic says this is normal (!?!?!?!) Can anyone confirm this? Or should locking the passenger door also lock the driver's door? (That's the way it has worked on every other car I have had with central locking.)

Please help as I think I need to go back to the garage and get this sorted out before the warranty ends.

Thanks in advance

Michael

So the question is... if your car has central locking, does locking the passenger door also lock the driver's door?

I am particularly interested if you have an E36 model BMW 3 series.

And this is central locking, not remote control central locking - so you have to put your key in a door.

Would appreciate a response!

I think thats normal.... my previous car, a Honda Civic, did the same thing and in my current car unlocking the boot doesn't unlock the rest of the car.

I think its a security thing, so that if you unlock the passenger door some guy lurking round by the drivers door can't hop in and steal it....
