K line

What is the right thing to do to the K line feed in the stereo wire harness if you're replacing the standard stereo with an aftermarket one on Audi's? Apparantly there is an issue with the diagnostic software when looking for codes etc.

its to do with aftermarket radios putting +12volt down the wrong cable.

Thanks for that Paul. I've just had a look at the connectors on the back of the alpine stereo and although pin 3 (K line- thin gauge yellow/red wire) is not connected to anything on the stereo (blank on stereo side of harness), it is connected to pin 7 on the car side harness and the alpine takes its battery supply off of that pin (pin 7- thick gauge yellow/red wire)? Doesn't that mean that the K line is effectively connected the power supply for the stereo? Is this right? What colour is the correct power supply lead (+12 Batt)on Audi's?

no idea. , most ive done is fit a bluetooth kit to my Sat Nav.

Although i fitted many stero systems in many cars over the years, none of them have been Audi or even VAG group cars, and more importantly i never bother with color codes of cables, i get the trusty multimeter out and just test for the voltages i need.

so are you saying that there is a link in the Alpine wiring harness putting linking Kline pin 3 to +12v?

but not connecting to the headunit on pin 3 at all?

if so sounds to me like you need to loose that link. so Kline connects to nothing.

either pop the pin out the plug, or cut it, in a way you can restore it if its wrong.

releasing the barbed pin from the plug would be easiest and tape it up safe so not to short.

No, the link to what the Rosstech site says is the K line is on the vehicle side wire harness/connector not on the stereo harness. So if rosstech are right I have two K lines; one on pin 3 which doesn't connect to anything on the stereo side connector (so in theory and by what rosstech say I should be fine) and the other on pin 7 which connects to the stereo side connector power supply, which means the stereo is grabbing the 12volts it requires of off Pin 7 which is essentially extended to pin 3 on the vehicle side. I've attached a diagram of that black connector on both the stereo and the car, it is the cars side thats causing the confusion.

hmm. picture of the linked cable is what i was expecting on the alpine side.

if its already linked on the car side i cant see how its a problem.

you might have to try it and find out?
