Just got a 5 dr black magic golf gti, dsg last week. Previous car was a proton satria gti, I wanted something more comfortable and without the quality problems of a proton, im very happy with the golf. Ive put on about 490kms in the past few days. Some impressions

+ its classy and understated (in black), the motor is super smooth and effortlessly powerful(except at idle where it rattles a bit) , dsg is beautifully fast, adept and fun, the sound the car makes when changing gears is cool (a faint whistling followed by a prrt, then a whistle, a “subtle kind of wrx”). The attention to detail is fantastic (just coming from a proton).

-although generally really well made (south African (im in brisbane Australia), just some very minor niggles which I can overlook in light of the great overall package. There is a very slight whistling sound from the driver window at high speed (not there all the time though, affected by cross winds perhaps?), and a slight noise from the dash (which comes and goes, bumpy surfaces brings it out). the road noise does intrude a little, but on smooth tarmac, it is gloriously quiet. The brakes are subtle and need practicing to get used to.

i took the car out on some twisty, windy and hilly roads and it is great. Just realised that my driving skills, and not ashamed to admit it, have to be improved to be put on par with the abilities of the car. It will go where you want it to without compromise. Ive managed to get abs going unintentionally a few times.

I thought I'd just say hello, and comment on what a fantastic forum this is.

I've taken the plunge and ordered a MK5 GTI - 5 Door, Diamond Black, Anthracite Leather, DSG (for me!) rear parking sensors (for the wife!), rear side air bags (for the little one), sunroof, arm rest and lux pack 1. Unfortunately I'm having o wait until an "06" plate for delivery frown.gif

I'm Currently driving a fully loaded Audi A3 TDI sport **FOR SALE** but decided that it's time to get practical with a 5 door, while still having a bit of fun.

Does anyone known if Launch Control is enabled by default on all DSG GTI, I'm dying to try it - I didn't have the bottle to try it on the test drive!!

Hi just picked up my GTi last night and drove 120 miles back to home. Like a few others here it was a cancelled order so arrived within three weeks from my decision. Its Diamond Black, manual, with no other options (it weights enough already!). My last car which I will have to now sell is a Honda S2000 GT 04 model, which was a cracking drivers car too (very different in charcter to the GTi). Before that I had a Honda Civic Type-R. I also have a Caterham Seven which I built with couple of mates for doing trackdays, against which most road cars tend to seem a little tame. I've owned a TVR Chimeara in the past too, which sounded better than it went.

I need to have a proper drive in the Golf before I have it sussed, but I was immediately impressed with the damping on the car. The way it drove over the most broken up surfaces was superb, allowing genuine a/b road pace. There is a great twisty road past the Lotus factory on my way home to Norwich which it drove over effortlessly. In either of the Hondas you could go as fast, but you would be 100% commited, whereas the Golf is more composed but maybe a bit less rewarding. You don't tend to realise how well you are cracking on until you catch up another vehicle going half your speed or less.

The Golf engine note is a major improvement over the old 1.8T in the Mk4, but shame its not a bit more vocal at times. My only other negative feedback was that the brakes are too highly assisted. This is not a problem as you can recalibrate your brain/foot to accomodate this, but I think it will make heel and toeing on down changes very difficult, especially with the floor mounted throttle (this was always fantastic fun and easy in the blippy throttle S2000)

Overall though the GTi seems like a superbly well balanced package, and I look forward to the next B road blast...

....Welcome to TSN and where we are all very enthusiastic about the Mk5 GTI. I enjoyed reading your assessment....Very real-world 169144-ok.gif .

If you want to hear the engine more as a driving aid plus gain a few extra bhp with slight throttle response improvement, check out a Milltek (or similar) exhaust system....Especially the Turbo-back Hi-flow.

Hi CJN1,

Was interested to hear that you have both a GTI and a Caterham 7. One of my mates has a Caterham 7 which I've been in a couple of times - in fact it was him saying "come on Rich, you've got to get something that will keep up with me!" that made me look at the GTI instead of the 2.0FSI

Was wondering how you feel the difference is, and whether I stand a chance in hell of keeping up with him on some twisties?! His is the basic 1.6 but is still very nippy.

anyway, glad you've got your car - I wouldn't want your dilemma of which car to take out at the weekend!

I agree with the engine note we had a leon cupra R before and the 2.0 mk5 GTI sounds so much better.

As for the heel/toe i myself find it easier with a floor mounted throttle like the Mk5s or BMWs.

Hello all. I popped into my local stealer on Friday to take a look at a GTi as my Leon Cupra R has to go back to the leasing company mid December and felt it was time I stated looking for a replacement. I test drove a demonstrator, loved it and then discovered that the Tornado red, 3 door, 17" in the showroom was immediately available. Three hours later I pit a deposit down to secure the car. Very much looking forward to enjoying the GTi. I rated the Cupra R very highly indeed and had the new shape equivalent been available I would have gone for that.

Thanks for the welcome. Ordered the car from Mann Egerton in Swindon. Sitting in their showroom right now looking very polished and sparkly red! I expect to be taking delivery second week of December as I have a car on contract which is going back on 17th. Bit of an impulse buy this as I was intending to llok at the Focus ST before I made a decision. I will post photos when I have the car - promise. yelrotflmao.gif

Easiest way is to register with Photobucket.com and upload them there and they'll automatically size themselves down to 250K for posting efficiently. The TSN method is also easy to post...."Choose File" when you preview your post and it'll appear as the link word "Attachment"....Load it....Copy its url....Edit your post and click "Image" and paste the url you just copied....Click and continue as instructed. Deselect the mark as edited box.

Is it worth ordering the factory SatNav? - Not in my opinion. I spent approx £50 less and have a Pioneer SatNav DVD Touch Screen combined with 50Wx4 Audio Head....check out the threads on this subject. If you prefer an OEM appearance then you'll prefer the factory version....I have no idea how good it is in practice....Anyone?

Hey! I like that combination of light interior and dark exterior. BBS + Beige Leather = Luxurious look and classy 169144-ok.gif Yet another style for the GTI....Trinny would approve! wink.gif

I've always loved those BBS wheels - very classic. Did you order them from the dealer? Cost?

Looking forward to seeing some sharper daylight pics too 169144-ok.gif

Your right exhaust is very quiet. My RS6 sounded like a bloody Nascar in comparison. Will be throwing on a miltek soon but will stick to twinn pipes at the back so the car looks STD. Will check out your posts on SAT NAV.

Was going to put VW sat nav in but i think you need the driver information option ? I have CD changer in arm rest so will have to pick an aftermarket head unit which is compatible.
