Jennifer
is the arm rest necessary ? or should I go for the dash mounted 6 CD? does anyone know if you can get it wired up for an ipod?
silentandy
IMHO the car looks better with the centre armrest, with or without the cd changer. You get the added bonus of the extra air vents for the rear. And yes, you can get a connection for ipods, I'm sure there's a few posts on here about that already somewhere. GTiMK5
Def get the arm rest, looks much better and is useful too. I have an IPOD fitted in mine using Dension Ice Link. Not sure that VW do anything themselves for the IPOD yet. I had to disconnect the 6 disc changer though so I could connect the IPOD kit but still have a single cd player on the stereo itself although I have no use for it at all cos all my CDs are on the IPOD. Jennifer
ordered GTi today with 6 CD changer in the armrest, could you tell me where I might get a Dension Ice Link and where it is connected in the car? Thanks
GTiMK5
Best doing a google search for it and shopping around for the cheapest option. It connects to the back of the stereo in the CD changer port. There is a cradle that fits on the dash similar to a hands free kit and the IPOD sits in this and it also charges it. There are other options available as well other than the Dension. Nice one on your order by the way, you will enjoy. How long for delivery? Jennifer
Thanks for the advise. My new GTi is expected at the begining of september to take advantage of new reg Plate. Fingers crossed it won't be delayed too much. just 3 months to wait!
sburke1
I assumed that if you got the RCD 500 that the 6 cd changer was automatically dash mounted? I too have added the centre armrest but thought that even with this option that the changer automatically went in the dash if you opted for the uprated stereo? Anyone out there a bit more knowledgable about this than me?

[/ QUOTE ] Your understanding is correct as far as mine goes -- the RCD500 has a 6xCD changer coupled to it and hence it will be in-dash, whereas the RCD300 & MFD2 (SatNav) both have to have the armrest-mounted 6xCD changer. RedRobin
Hi Jennifer....The arm rest is certainly comfy when trickling in a traffic jam or just parked up relaxed and waiting etc. Obviously we each have our individual preferences for sound quality, CD changers etc but I think most people who've now got their beloved GTIs would agree that the VW supplied audio quality is very very ordinairy. For a start there are no full EQ controls, only simple bass/treble/balance....Perhaps the CD changer package is better re sound quality. But personally I usually create my own playlists on CD or iPod and might only carry a couple of CDs with me in the car. As a Mac user I use iPods and so I've decided to fit the new Pioneer DEH-P70BT head unit which also has a behind-dashboard mounted iPod CD-IB100 adaptor. An iPod (but not iPod Shuffle) can then be controlled from the head unit and steering wheel. Also this particular Pioneer is Bluetooth phone enabled and has much better EQ control. Proper Mk5 Golf head unit surround panels are now availabIe (I don't need satnav....just a gimmick imo and I get much fuller navigation info from my Mac system anyway). I tend to stop playing playing any music if I'm driving hard and need to hear the engine. As I said, it's down to your personal preferences, but I would strongly advise you not to get anything which relies on FM radio connection for an iPod (sound is crap whatever your standards!). I have read bad reports from users about Denison IceLink but I don't have any experience of it. I'm in the SouthWest too....Bridport in West Dorset. If you ever see me (Tornado Red VW05 RED) please feel free to flag me down and chat....And that goes for any other of you guys here. The roads around here are purrfect for the GTI....All types of road It gets pretty agonising waiting for your order to arrive but well worth the wait. AlanH
I think that the hard-wired iPod option is by far the best. The wireless versions seem to require a lot of retuning to find an "empty" part of the FM spectrum. My iPod sits in the glovebox held securely by a couple of Velcro patches attached to the case. The lead comes in through a small hole drilled in the rear of the glove box. It's out of sight and out of mind.

I think it's superb, the sound quality is amazing. Thbe only thing missing is display of the ID3 tags, but that's VW's fault not Dension's

RedRobin
Hi Alan....Yes, I probably missed out stating that what I was talking about was a 'hardwire' connection to a female plug in the glovebox....From there I will use a high quality PlanetWaves male-to-male connection to an iPod Shuffle so that my passenger can also "lap-mount" or cradle & control the Shuffle. RedRobin
Aswall and GT....I best try and find where I read the criticism, but, as I wrote, I don't have experience of it and you do and you both say it sounds good. Limited to MP3 format though isn't it? How many gig of music storage?....Which reminds me I must leave here and do my Sunday jam session gig! Catch ya later. aswall
Robin, it's not limited to mp3, most of mine is in Apple lossless which is exdellent sound quality. I have a 20gb and need more storage but am putting off replacing it with a 60gb as I have heard that Apple will announce 80 and 100gb models in the near future. The sound quality will be the same as your proposal as you will be using the same line inputs and effectively making your own version of the icelink
RedRobin
Thanks Aswall....That's good to know. I usually import using AAC format. Being a musician I have masses of storage both internal and external but prefer to keep my gear as simple as will do the job....So I won't be 'building another hard drive of music files' in the GTI....I'll just build an aftermarket sound system to play what I bring to the car. My teenage daughter has Apple gear as well and is often my car DJ! We like similar music
aswall
If you have the space, Lossless will sound better than AAC. I moved over to it as hard disk space is getting cheaper all the time and the need for compression is not really there any more
RedRobin
Thanks Aswell....I'll take your advice I keep my own music (recorded in Logic) in AIF format. Cheers
