Ben
My bothers A3 won't turn over. Turn on ignition, all lights appear, immobiliser one goes out as normal and nothing happens. Won't turn over, make a noise or anything. Tried both keys. It happened a couple of weeks back, then went away. Obviously taking it to dealers or anywhere with VAGCOM etc is not possible. Battery appears fine. Ideas? Cheers Ben
gambba
No noise at all, not even a tick, tick from the starter solenoid? If it was anything to do with the imobiliser then it should just keep on cranking the engine over, as it just disables the ECU. When you say checked the battery how? and what was the exact reading? s4dreamer
Have you tried rocking it backwards and forwards with 4th or 5th gear engaged ? It may be the starter that's jammed. Remember that instruments etc take very little current, so even if the battery is quite low, likely as not they will still light. The starter motor on the other hand takes just about all the juice your battery can supply, so if the battery is well down, you won't have much joy. You could try hooking up some jump leads from your car to your mates and see if that helps. Trev
Ben
No noise whatsoever. If it was the battery then it would gradually deteriorate and you'd notice it struggling to turn the car over. It was sat for 8 days last week whilst we were on holiday and started fine. Yesterday it was only sat overnight and not a murmour. It just sounds too silent apprently to be starter/battery related. Cheers for the replies though. I've told him to get the RAC round to have a peek. Gambba, are you sure that it would turn over with the Audi immobiliser enabled? Drillslinger
Dude, HAVE you tried jump starting it?
Ben
He can't get the plastic cover off the battery terminal without breaking it so that is a last resort really. But that battery wouldn't just completly die, it would go gradually.
gambba
Bjacks, I can't say that I'm 100% sure about the imobiliser, but in general this is the way imobilisers work, based on my BMW and my old PUG........... If it's a cell gone within the battery then there may be no symptoms of it getting worse and worse, but is uncommon. If you have a meter just stick it across the battery and see what the voltage is (In key off and key on positions), start with the basics...... [/ QUOTE ] Can't say for certain in the Audi, but on the wife's Golf, the engine turned over fine, and even (once) started running for a second or two. Then we had to pay VW to reprogram the keys
Mo-S3
If the imppbiliser kicks in on the Audis then it allows the engine to turn over but not start the car. If the battery cant supply enough juice to start the car then a definate sign would be the instument cluster immediatly going off or to a very dim as soon as the key is turned. Ben
Yep, Audi has just confirmed that it will indeed turnover. They reckon it is either the starter or the started circuit. RAC man to come and try later before my bro has to start spending money. Cheers Ben
Ben
Turns out to be an earth connector on the starter. Bit of tape and off he goes. Lesson learnt
