deepi
I just bought a second hand remote key fob for my golf mk4 from ebay, got the blade cut from the guy on ebay and inserted it into the fob. Only thing now is to program it. Any ideas? (VW want about £50 to do it). I noticed the VAG COM software does the key matching, anyone know any garages in manchester that have it? One interesting thing is, if i start my car with my normal key, and then with the new key fob it works fine
theduisbergkid
I think this is in the manual, I had a similar thing with my mk4, I recall having to sit in a unlocked car, then pressing, lock and unlock about a dozen times (or something), take a look in the manual. Calm Chris
It's for two reasons. 1. Security, to prevent copy coded key being in the wrong hands. VW will still expect proof of ID and vechicle ownership. 2. To screw you for £70 (well that's the amount VW stealer mentioned to me! Rotten that you haven't got a choice, but then sort of prudent regarding the cars being stolen via a 3rd party with a coded key.
deepi
then I'd know who did it! - if they made the excuse that the codes have been comprimised they simply tell all their customers 2 come in for a recoding
Calm Chris
No, the transducer / transponder thingy is fixed only in the car. The key re-prog only sets up a handshake. So keys cannot be set to any code other than the one set in car, if you want to start it! I see you point, but in today's world VW being the only authorised new key setting up point prevents scum from walking in to VW and saying my reg and then getting away with my R32. Sorry mate, I do not see that being tight and whinging about a security item on a car that can cost up to £24k is valid. Just go down there pay it and don't feck up the key again! I don't dispute that it's a rip off, a new key plus coding is £145 IIRC which is taking the p155, but hey ho, if it prevent scum, then I'll pay it! CaribMale
Yes found it, and it didnt work I had a similar problem with my 2009 VW Fox. My remote key stopped working for some unexplained reason. I opened the car manually and started the engine. Then I pressed the LOCK button twice. If you are successful in programming the key, then the car locks should automatically engage after pressing the lock button twice as described. I am not sure if this simple method would work for older VW models.

Just to confirm this just worked for my wife's 2007 Fox Urban. Thought the batteries were dead, took them out noticed top one was corroded, rubbed it a bit, put it back in and pressed the buttons and the LED lit up with each push. But wouldn't unlock the doors. Used the key to open the door, turned on the ignition, pressed lock twice and BAM, all good. Cheers! Sai
