a4tdi130
GCab : Postcode's work perfectly. Enter the full postcode, then the house number, and it leads you to the door. Rusty : No idea if the maps are the same for the GO and PDA versions, but I would be very surprised if they weren't? PM me your address and I'll stick a dvd in the post for you so you can try it out if you like.
L3ETT
Thanks for the review, was thinking of getting the 500 so i think you've just made up my mind for me. Regarding the bluetooth phone access, the TomTom website seems to say only a few phones are compatible with phonebook access. - but are you saying you can copy your phonebook to the TomTom unit? Also is there any way of connecting it to a stereo, for auto muting etc? TIA.
a4tdi130
I have a Nokia 6230i and the way the phonebook access works is that it copies it from the phone to the TomTom - it doesn't access it "live". So if you update your phone contacts, you need to resync (takes just a few seconds). If the phonebook access sync doesn't work though, all you need to do is create a text file and place it in the appropriate directory on the TomTom... I was having a hunt round and found all my contacts listed in a plain text file with name and numbers. Regarding contact to a stereo you can buy a "permanent/professional mounting kit" which let's you hardwire it - this includes audio out, mute wire, etc. I'm not sure how much it is though. When I was fitting my unit, I noticed that there were a lot of unused pins on the connector underneath the TomTom, so it's very likely that you can just find the appropriate pin and tap of the audio and mute signals from there - I'm sure all the hardware would be in the tomtom and not the external unit. danksy
Anyone for a group buy on this? I'm willing to try and organise one if we have enough takers (say 5+) Cheers Nick
N3WOB
Might be a silly question but is the sound delivered via a speaker on the satnav unit or the car's audio system. TIA
a4tdi130
It's got a (very loud!) built in speaker. Please don't do a group buy, it will only upset me Or atleast do the 300 or 500 model?

Thorburn
I'd be interested in a couple months when I have some money, but guessing would be sooner than that
Rachel
[ QUOTE ] ...and that's it! Any specific questions, feel free to ask [/ QUOTE ] Is the software CD for Windows only (like Garmin) - or does it do OS X too? The TomTom website seems to imply it is for both platforms. The TomTom 300 and 500 (this month) have just arrived on our shores down here - and if the software is multiplatform I'll be off to buy one in a flash! a4tdi130
I've no idea I'm afraid Rachel, I only use PC To be honest though you don't need the software - I installed it and thought "what's the point of this" as it didn't appear to offer any functionality at all, just some demo's. The unit is USB so when you plug it in to your computer, it gets seen as another hard-drive, and any modifications you want to do are done at hard-drive level (drag&drop different maps, voices, POI's, etc). danksy
To be honest the Maplin price with the discount is cheaper than I think we will get anywhere. The lowest I have got so far is £535 with free delivery, based on 10 units! PS I also have a linky for a cashback scheme where you can get a couple of quid for signing up, and 1% off maplins cashback, so making the price about £495! danksy
I'll phone around a few places today and see if we can beat £495 otherwise I will send those interested the linky to the cashback scheme i mentioned to save a further fiver!
steve2
If someone can buy it through their VAT registered company it could get as low as 468.08 from Staples
danksy
Tried two more places and lowest price is £532.20 inc. VAT. Sorry guys I think Maplins is the way to go. Cheers Nick

a4tdi130
Hehe not at all, I paid the premium for getting mine early. I originally ordered with Maplin but somewhere else had them in stock and I couldn't resist, so cancelled and paid about £60 extra to get it next day instead of a week later

Rachel
I checked out the Go 300 this afternoon - very neat. I was impressed - thought it to be much better than the Navman and other PDA equivalents. Retailing here for $1099. I think I'll wait for the Go 500 to show up later this month before deciding. a4tdi130
That's about £470, very expensive! The 300 is about £360 in the UK (About AU$845)
Rachel
It might be because there is only one retail chain (Harvey Norman) selling them - so no competition (yet) to push the prices down. It may also have something to do with the arrangements on using the WhereIs Australian maps for the database...
