Ritey
After a piece of freeware that will allow me to monitor the traffic or amount of packets that are being transmitted over a network, any suggestions .....
CarMad
Sorry not that into networking but most packages I have seen / played with have been pretty pricey and certainly not freeware. But I look a while ago and found some decent ones that worked quite well but they ran out after a while and each device needed to be to support SNMP, so not your normal home networking device really. Would be interested if anyone else uses anything freeware.
shark_90
You need a packet sniffer mate. Ethereal is pretty good, and free http://www.ethereal.com/download.html
John32
I have been evaluating this and it seems pretty good. John
Rachel
Or if you want it on more platforms - not just Windoze... Try the original (free) and the best: MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher) Used everywhere including some of the biggest telcos and outsourcing companies in the world! LukeX
Depending on traffic volume, ntop can be very useful, especially if you want more information about the traffic than just data/packet rates. If you want to monitor more than just one link in a switched network things start to get interesting (and expensive!) Ntop Homepage
Ritey
Cheers guys and gals, basically needed to gestimate how much traffic a server would have with a certain piece of software running off it through the web x the amount of users. Ethereal is installed currently but I may have a look at some of the others
schmoo
depends on whether you want to monitor traffic on your own machine or another and get the stats on yours.. in which case mrtg would be good for you (providing you have the noodles to set it up) ethereal is another i suppose.. all depends on to which end you want this info for.
