Agoogy
Flippin awesome and GREAT value from pixmania.co.uk although I was a bit put out by having French instructions and having to download English ones from Canon's website. The camera has this function whereby you select a colour from the viewfinder and then it takes a b/w picture with only that colour evident..Schindler's List style... The IXUS is also made out of metal...which is nice...
Rachel
I am on my 2nd Ixus APS film camera (the first was absconded with at a dinner/dance). Beautifully engineered - very James Bond when you power it up and it "unfolds". I assume the digital ones are similar?
Andrew
I was thinking yesterday about doing a post for a digital camera recommendation. The 40 looked good (I saw it at the weekend) but now (and sorry to pee on your fire) there is a 700 version with 7 megapixels which I might get. It is a bit more expensive though. Digital cameras seem to be going the way of the PC market, bigger and bigger figures every week. Maybe I should hang on for the 10 megapixel mother-lode camera? Rachel
You'll need one heck of a 'puta with big grunty processor(s) and LOTS of RAM (maybe 2GB or more), not to mention huge disks if you're going to play in the 8Mpixel and up world. or not. CarMad
As Rachel mentions, you need some serious capacity memory cards when you start going up to the high megapixel numbers. I am looking at getting a new Fuji F10 with 6.3M. It seems to have a higher pixel count in reviews in the photo than some 7M seem to record. Plus it has an ISO rating of 1600, thats SLR territory and means you can take photos indoors without needing a flash. Have a look it has beaten the Sony P200 and IXUS 700 in the reviews. Its not perfect what camera is, but it is certainly moving the pocket cameara forward in a big way.
Agoogy
Depends what you're planning to do with the photos I spose. I was told and read that 4mp is good enough for 6x4's and even for decent A4.... so I naturally thought 5mp would be all I'd ever need for printing, enlarging and maybe hanging on walls... I naturally went for bigger better and posher, but when you start getting real and compromising this camera is a really good deal at the mo'. Andrew
Ah, well I don't know an awful lot about cameras but the fact that you can take a picture of something and then zoom in on a particular area with no loss (perceivable) in quality has really sold me the idea of a digital camera. More megapixels, the greater the opportunity to zoom in without the loss in quality. 7 will do for now although eBay are advertising (unheard of) brands boasting 12 mp's. From what Rachel says I'd need a mainframe for that!
frazervisser
At work i use a 16mp digital back. The more MP you have the better the images will be when enlarged, if you are only printing to a 10x8" print then a 6-8mp camera will be more than enough. The best thing to look for in a optical zoom rather than digital zoom which is just cropping in to the CCD rather than re-focusing the light! I have just read about a new 39mp digial back producing files of 117mb!!!! I thought our 50mb files were hard to handle!!!
frazervisser
[ QUOTE ] Plus it has an ISO rating of 1600, thats SLR territory and means you can take photos indoors without needing a flash. [/ QUOTE ] But the "noise" that it will create will be dreadful! With digital cameras its better to keep the ISO low and use flash or a tripod. (one of those photos is actually buried in the LoJ forum somewhere)
StealthMullet
I have an Ixus APS, very nice little camera but haven't used it since I got my digital purely because I'm too lazy for film now. I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my Finepix 2600 (only 2.1mp but takes excellent pictures) and was thinking along the lines of a Ixus 50, Nikon S1 or Fuji Finepix Z1 (looks very cool in black) as I'd like something a little more portable. Trouble is I can't find any comparisons of cameras in this area and I hate buying something without doing my research first ad I've read mixed reviews on all 3 of these... Agoogy
Enter the model number into www.dealtime.co.uk, pick one of the better prices and supplying websites should all offer basic comparison faclities, Pixmania certainly does...thats pretty much how I came to the decisio, that and customer reviews, and the fact it has a quality metal casing.. simple things... StealthMullet
Yeh I've used Pixmania before for my camcorder and found them to be very competitive in terms of price and couldn't fault the delivery. I'll take a look at that webby, cheers

They did a back to back with a D50 I think it was in one review and the camera did very well considering the lens / and price difference. Its on my list for a camera to fit in the pocket for gigs etc. anyway.
Daz
Don't forget that Pixmania does not supply UK spec kit. Most of their stuff is French spec.

[/ QUOTE ] Ive had a quick look at all 3 cameras, and IMHO they are much the same. The fuji sensor maybe slightly better in this price range. But if i were to get a small dig camera i would choose the Canon Digital IXUS 700 at 7.1 mp this should be pretty future proof camera. also i can't get over how cheap it is I want to get this Canon next http://www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/cameras/digital_slr/eos_1ds_markii/index.asp But the body only is £4500. But it would be a fun toy! maybe if we have a busy xmas i can get one in the new year
